In Progress

Blocked Titles

When I want to contribute to a certain film page, IMDb sometimes says "Declined because this title has been blocked by staff." Blocked titles automatically reject any contributions. This is ridiculous. For example, recently, I tried to add the keyword (subgenre) "screwball comedy" to the film "My Man Godfrey" but I got the said feedback. Blocking titles might have been thought of as a way to deal with never-ending edit wars, but IMDb is a website that is continually developed by user-generated content. Blocking this creates a conflict with the user-generated content policy. If you do not want contributions from users, even for certain films or series, then create an extremely professional cinephile team and pay them for all contributions. If not, do not block users from suggesting contributions.

Hi ekcinephile- Thank you for providing this example! Further reveiwing, we can confirm that we were unable to replicate the blocked messaging for the title you have referenced. Can you provide us with further examples where you have encountered this and can you also link your IMDb profile page? Cheers!

Hello again. Here is the link to my IMDb profile: https://www.imdb.com/user/ur16734508/?ref_=hm_nv_profile The exact message I received for the edit attempt I mentioned above is as follows: Keyword Addition screwball-comedy subgenre Reason: Unable to accept. Your contribution has been declined. Unfortunately we were unable to accept your submission as the item submitted to has been blocked by staff. Please see our Help Site for further information or details on how to contact us. I have encountered this situation in my many edit attempts for films. Other examples from the recent past include: The Omega Man (1971), The Tenant (1976), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Monster House (2006), Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012). So obviously many, many titles have been blocked to prevent editing.

Also reported here two years ago and allegedly fixed at that time: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/uh/65592c08e8d62e164ca7c5f8
