Contribution Interface Updates - New Features Now Live

We're excited to announce several improvements to our contribution interface that will make submitting credits easier and more consistent. What's New: *Improved Attribute Selection We've replaced the free-text box with a pop-up featuring tick-boxes for valid attribute options, making selection clearer and more straightforward. *Renamed field We have renamed the “Occupation” field to “Role”. We think this is a better description of what is meant to go in it - the role the person had on the title. *Standardized Crew Credit Fields All crew credit categories now have both "Role" and "Attribute" fields, making the submission process more consistent. Previously, some credit categories had both an "Occupation" and "Attribute" field, while others only had an "Attribute" field. *Enhanced Role Selection The Role drop-down menus now feature carefully curated options that are relevant to each credit category. Previously, this menu contained automatically generated options, many of which contradicted our policies - leading to poor quality and ineligible data. *Dedicated "Self" Category You can now submit “self” credits under a dedicated "Self" category, with no more need to use the Actor/Actress categories with "Self" or "Themselves" prefixes. These updates are now live in the contribution interface. We hope these changes will make your contribution experience more efficient and user-friendly. For a preview of the changes, please see our announcement article at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/new-features-updates/contribution-interface-updates/G423MQL4MCQJHTHQ# As always, we appreciate your valuable contributions to IMDb! — The IMDb Team

Wow, more extra work Thanks! *Renamed field such an useless feature I already fix random, unnecessary and misleading roles added by clueless people, now when it's kinda necessary to add it, because it reminds you, they will add even more bs As always updates, not that would make your contributions work easier, it just adds more extra work I really appreciate it

Although not mentioned in the announcement there are other things that are different, whether intentionally or not. Some things still need adjustments. - The form seems to require order numbers for writer credits even though the guidelines say not to use them if unsure. - There is some autocorrection of capitalization in role fields. It is currently not possible to enter a writer role such as inspired by the novel "Vineland" by without having it autocorrected to inspired by the novel "vineland" by

The issues with Writer orders being mandatory has been fixed. Thanks again for raising it! We will also fix the issue of automatically converting that pattern in the Role field to lower-case as soon as possible. I will update you when it's fixed. Many thanks again!

With the new interface, how should I add a 'credit only' cast attribute? I only see the options 'voice', 'uncredited', 'as...', 'archive footage', and 'archive sound'. I have been updating series where regular cast members are often credited without appearing in certain episodes.

It's labeled "credited, but did not work on title".

I do not see that option. Only the five options which I mentioned. I'm updating the cast list of a TV episode.

What device are you using? The other attribute options should be listed underneath the ones you listed. Is there definitely not a scroll bar for you to scroll down within the pop-up to see them?

If you're on a touch device like an iPhone/Android phone then you may just need to swipe to scroll down the list?

I am using Microsoft Edge on a laptop. There is no scroll bar, but I now notice that when I zoom out to 67%, five more options appear. Amongst them is indeed the 'credited, but did not work on title' one.

I was Beta Tester for this and am grateful lots of the things I did not like, never made it this far, thanks for listening to the feedback on those. But since it went live, it's now warning me about not adding a role in the editor section which was previously left blank for onscreen 'editor' credits, what is the procedure now going forward, do we add 'editor' in the role as standard or just override and leave it blank like in the past? Same question for 'composer' roles. I mean this bit pasted below suggests the former, but I want to be sure. "*Enhanced Role Selection The Role drop-down menus now feature carefully curated options that are relevant to each credit category. Previously, this menu contained automatically generated options, many of which contradicted our policies - leading to poor quality and ineligible data"

Hi - you're right that we're now warning about a blank Role for all credit categories, whereas before we only warned about it for the "departmental" credit categories that had both the Occupation and Attribute fields. You can totally leave it blank for non-departmental credit categories like Editor as before. If you leave Role blank for a credit category like Editor then it should display on the site as "editor", i.e. we will fill in the role for you as we did before. We do plan to relax that new rule in the contribution UI as soon as possible, so that it behaves like it used to, i.e. it will only warn you for the non-departmental credit categories as before. I hope it's not too painful in the meantime!

Regarding your edit: Yes, the same thing applies to Composer - it will still display in the right way if you acknowledge the warning and leave it blank (will display the role as "composer" on the site). Composer is one of the credit categories we plan to exclude the warning for asap, so as to match the previous behavior of the interface.

Thanks for clarifying, Dylan. It won't be a problem for me, long as I know I'm doing the right thing in my contributions by doing what IMDb is wanting me to do, I'm okay ticking the box until it gets polished up in the future. Cheers.

Why only maximum 25 Self credits can be added on same time only? In many cases are much more

794 Messages

 •

10.1K Points

that means when I add a new title with more than 25 Self Credits it can happen that it takes hours till I can continue cause many titles are shown hours after being accepted

And Why we cant select longer from the longer list? Now we have to write things like commissioning editor always by ourself, cause its not in the list under Producer, Additional Crew will get much more funnier with that

Under this new conditions I am thinking about stopping submitting completely, everything takes much longer and gets much more worse

25 Self credits are not enough when you're updating a news program or documentary. Can the role field be made wider? With it so much smaller than it used to be it will make it easier to miss typos. The attribute field now adds a lot more time to my submissions. It was easier to use auto-complete or just c&p "(archive) (uncredited)" into the attribute field when updating large casts.

and now we cant correct longer simply wrong added Selfs from Actor and Actress like on UEFA Women Euro 2025, Wimbledon and French Open were all players are flagged as Actors and Actresses

794 Messages

I did the ZDF MOrgenmagazin vom 16.09.2025 right before, cause of the Changes I needed 4 submissions for that

794 Messages

Now I have to add Titles first without Self datas long before I will work on it like Arte Journal, cause it has always more than 25 Self Credits, the Morgenmagazin has mostly between 75 and 100 Self Credits

794 Messages

But we can add now 25 Writer Credits

"and now we cant correct longer simply wrong added Selfs from Actor and Actress like on UEFA Women Euro 2025, Wimbledon and French Open were all players are flagged as Actors and Actresses" I have added the non-fiction keyword to "UEFA Women's Euro 2025", which has the effect of changing all its cast credits to self credits. This is much simpler than editing all the credits. However, I do think it might be helpful if a credit was still automatically moved to Self if you added Self to the character name. I tested it on one credit on a different title, but it is still under Actress/Cast despite starting with Self. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10641222/

I noticed an odd "correction" when trying to submit new credits: "creditedRole has been converted to Title Case to conform with our formatting standards" This "correction" would be done whenever I tried to add ANY word, or network designation, before your preselected list of "Self" Roles,...Host, Hostess, Anchor, etc For example: ABC Host CNN Hostess APPLE Anchor etc All would be corrected to: Abc Host Cnn Hostess Apple Anchor But if I used those capitalizations before any other word NOT in your list, then they are NOT "corrected". ABC Witness CNN Fact Checker APPLE Weathermen Please adjust creditedRole rules so that full-word capitalizations can be used when followed by one of your pre-selected roles. Thank you.

Maybe this is just temporary, but I can not edit an existing cast list on a documentary or news program when the cast members all had SELF listed as role. To be clear, none of the names of the cast appear when I selected CORRECT for the cast section. I also tried to edit an existing episode of a late-night talk show. Same thing happened. As a test, I went to a movie I recently edited, and when I select CORRECT, all of the cast's names are shown as normal. So, this seems to only be affecting shows where SELF has been used. Please advise.

The cast credits that are for one reason or another identified as Self credits should be accessible in the Self section.

Hmm, ok, thanks. I see that now when I select EDIT PAGE from the title page. But when accessing IMDB through a computer's web browser, I was selecting EDIT appears to the right of Top Cast, which is then followed by the credits for the cast. It's a bit silly to have an EDIT button next to the listed cast of a news show, if it's going to pull up a non-existent list of actors. Thanks for the reply, but this still needs to be fixed.

As I said above, it's any page where the cast is composed of SELF credits. FYI,...I'm accessing IMDB with a Chrome browser on a PC. Here's just one example: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt38109615/

Text is being automatically converted to lowercase. I'm entering "Former NRL Player" and it automatically converts it to Nrl instead of NRL. This is incorrect. Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation Link : https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/text-automatically-converting-to-lowercase/68df24dc8f11a15bc21527c7 Title : Text automatically converting to lowercase

Where are you entering it? I don't see that autoconversion in the Self section.

172 Messages

In the Self section, in the role. If I c&p NRL it remains all caps, but if I type it in, or edit it to correct it, it reverts to Nrl. A message is displayed (I've just noticed this actually) states: The following fixes have been applied automatically: - creditedRole has been converted to Title Case to conform with our formatting standards. So will this happen with all acronyms? https://imgur.com/a/s6qLiJy

Found yet another bug. I just tried to create a new title on The Beatles. When I entered "The Beatles" in a multi-word title, it "corrected" the case of "The" to "the". Here is the correction explanation that was spit back to me. Wow. We should have the ability to override this. The following fixes have been applied automatically. Strange capitalization. The word 'The' is usually written as 'the'.

Thank you - we will fix this asap. Were you contributing it under the new Self credit category or Cast (Actor/Actress)? And in the Role field or somewhere else like the "credited as" attribute?

11 Messages

 •

No, as I said, I was creating a new title, where it asks basic info: Title Name, Type, Year, etc. Literally the first step here: https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/edit?update=title&ref_=helpms_ch_t_newtitle_ra I added the title anyway with "the Beatles". It is still being processed. I will correct it once you guys fix this on your end. Thanks.
