Coordinated Bot Activity (of same regions/identical content/similar dates) Targeting A Certain Celebrity Recent Projects, Giving Low Scores
It has come to my attention that recent projects (all in Chinese) starring Chinese actress Yang Mi (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2468729/) as female lead have been targeted by bots—primarily from the U.S., Canada, and Germany (English and German speaking regions)—artificially lowering their IMDb ratings.
For example, her latest project, In the Name of the Brothers 2024 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27731648/), holds a 9.7/10 on iQiyi rated by 2000+ people (a platform requiring users to watch the show before rating) but has an unusually low 3.9/10 on IMDb (rated by 227 users). Upon closer inspection, four negative reviews were posted on IMDb. Two content identical reviews were posted on 16 May 2024 by both accounts created in May 2024. Both accounts rated only two same projects. These are the concerned reviews. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27731648/reviews/?item=rw9792635) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27731648/reviews/?item=rw9792527). The other two reviews, posted on 16 and 18 November 2024, were from accounts created in November 2024. The content of these reviews were also identical, and also rated overlapping other projects. These are the concerned reviews (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27731648/reviews/?item=rw10145923) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27731648/reviews/?item=rw10143806). (including giving other Yang Mi's projects low ratings).
Notably, IMDb’s regional ratings for this show In the Name of the Brothers 2024 show suspiciously low scores from English/German-speaking countries where the show has never been released (this is Chinese speaking show): the U.S. (2.3), Canada (2.1), and Germany (3.8).
This pattern repeats across Yang Mi’s recent projects. For Hu Yao Xiao Hong Niang: Yue Hong Pian (2024, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21388150/), the U.S. and Canada gave scores of 4.2 and 2.6, respectively. For Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a HotPot (2023, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26689942/), a Chinese film only streamed in China, regional scores from the U.S., Canada, and Germany are 5.0, 4.8, and 5.1. For Xie Xie Ni, Yi Sheng (2022, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11298622/), regional scores are U.S. (4.4), Canada (1.2), and Germany (5.7). For Bao Feng Yan (2021, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10048926/), Canada gave a score of 1.9. For Zhu Meng Qing Yuan (2019, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9457950/), the U.S. and Canada gave scores of 2.2 and 1.4.
This is not an isolated incident. Since 2018, there have been national reports of paid bots attacking Yang Mi’s reputation and projects pre-release locally in Mainland China platforms (http://media.people.com.cn/n1/2018/0510/c40606-29975725.html, https://www.hk01.com/%E5%8D%B3%E6%99%82%E5%A8%9B%E6%A8%82/747755/, https://news.qq.com/rain/a/20240422A05DMR00). However, the escalation to IMDb —an international platform— is deeply concerning.
I urge IMDb to investigate this coordinated bot activities (from same regions) to manipulate ratings and undermine the integrity of its platform. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
