Solved

credit order

I know that IMDb prefers to use the "most complete on-screen listing" as the reference for credit order, and that's "usually the end titles." Does this mean the main titles at the end of the film, or just the end credit crawl? The main titles at the end of the film often have an order dictated by contracts. But if the crawl is in order of appearance, does that mean IMDb will prioritize appearance order and ignore the order used for the end of picture main titles? I'm hoping to update the order of credits for an existing title to reflect the order in the main titles. Right now, the order of credits on IMDb matches neither the main titles nor the crawl (which is order of appearance).

When there are main titles with only the main cast and an end crawl with the whole cast, the end crawl is the most comprehensive cast list.

Thanks @Peter_pbn @rstander211 This is documented at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/credit-order/G8QZ9QSY5EVKAPNF

Thanks. So for this particular title, which is currently showing an order that does not match *either* the main titles or the end crawl, if I try to submit a correction to have the main title order reflected on IMDb and provide video of the full end credits as supporting evidence, IMDb will instead reorder to match the crawl?

In this case the order has to be corrected using the online Update Form, based in the on screen end credits. You can take a look at our Help Articles for instructions: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/how-do-i-correct-credits/GB89HGHNUMFYFHEJ?ref_=helpart_nav_2#

Thanks Fran, I'm certainly willing and able to submit the correction using the online Update Form. But it sounds like the correction will only be accepted if it changes the order to match the crawl, which actually gets us further from the desired goal of matching the main title end credits (and aligning with contractual obligations). From the responses here, it sounds like there's no way to fix this on IMDb to have the credit order here match the contractually obligated order of the main title end credits if those same names show up differently-ordered in the crawl.

They must be ordered based on the order from the official on screen end credits, according to our Help Articles: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/how-are-cast-credits-ordered-why-don-t-the-main-stars-appear-at-the-top-of-the-cast/G39K5N4YYV2QJ4GR?ref_=helpsrall# Feel free to submit the contributions. Cheers!

Okay, related question. How does one affect the order of credits on IMDb (not IMDbPro)? For example, on Shakespeare in Love on IMDbPro, Gwyneth Paltrow is far down the list to match the film's end credit crawl, but on the film's main page on IMDb, she's listed first and shows up in the "Top cast". The Punisher is also an example of this, where in the full listing it shows up as end credits order, but on the main page of IMDb, the actual stars are listed first. So this is clearly possible! If I update the credit order on IMDbPro to match the end crawl, how can I then update the order on IMDb so the actual "stars" of the film are listed first (as easily determined by the names listed in the main titles before the crawl)?

Did some more digging and found this info: "We're aware that casts in order of appearance or alphabetical order sometimes mean a lead actor is buried relatively deep in the cast list. This is somewhat unfortunate. We do have a separate system for indicating the lead actors via the "Stars" section, but this can only be amended internally by IMDb staff members." (https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/cast-acting-credits-guidelines/GH3JZC74FVYKKFMD#castordering) So how do I request consideration by IMDb staff members to indicate the lead actors via the "Stars" section? I can provide the full end credits of the film as evidence, which shows both the main titles (for just the stars) and the crawl showing the full cast in order of appearance.

@Fran @Col_Needham Can you provide any information about how to request IMDb staff member review of which cast members are included in the "Stars" section for a film's listing on IMDb?

@rstander211- Hi, If the title where the main performer(s) are credited lower in the on screen credits and are not showing up within the Stars section, you can make the request to staff directly within our Contact Form or here within the community, and a staff member can review. Please note, however, that staff will only consider the changes if it involves a leading role.

Thanks @Maya! This does involve a leading role. The film in question is Nine Days: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10451852 Here is a link to view the complete end credits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emqPDZ8x1qA Credits for the leading roles begin at 02:29. You'll see that the 5th single card is for Arianna Ortiz, and we'd like to have her included in the "Top cast" section on IMDb.

Thanks for your quick attention to this! I didn't mean to put Arianna at the top, above other leading cast who are credited before her in the film. Could the top cast be listed in an order that matches the title cards? So it would be: Winston Duke Zazie Beetz Benedict Wong David Rysdahl Arianna Ortiz Tony Hale Bill Skarsgård

@rstander211 This has been addressed now as best as we can. The "Stars" section at the top of the page has room for three names; the cast list on https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10451852/ will move the first four stars to the front (so not, Arianna nor the others, sorry. The full cast list is now in complete end credits order per IMDb policy -> https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10451852/fullcredits/
