Name merging confusion

I'm using my main page - I go to name merge - I find the page with alternate spelling of my name that has one credit, and then the warning message pops up that reads as if I'm merging my "exisiting" page into the one that has one credit, meaning the warning is telling me that the page that has one credit will be my main page ... but I'm trying to do the reverse - I'm confused, does that mean I have to create a whole new account for that wrong spelling, and then merge it from there so i can merge it into the one that spells correctly? What kind of acrobatics is this?
