Solved

Nearly all still frames (100!) from movie 'Grand Prix'(1966) removed by IMDb last year!

Dear staff,

Over the years, probably two other contributors, and in 2022 myself, uploaded about 100 still images (i.e. screenshots) from this movie to the IMDb. As you can see in the 'mediaindex' archived by the Internet Archive in January 2023, these totalled 144 photos, which also included some behind the scenes-shots:

https://web.archive.org/web/20230116210410/https://20230116210410/www.imdb.com/title/tt0060472/mediaindex

(attached as screenshot, in case the link fails to work)

Now, to my utter dismay, IMDb apparently deleted 93 of them all at once, leaving only 51, just about 9 of which are actual frames from the movie!

I can't speak for the other contributors, but I took great pains to capture and identify a lot of bit players, many of whom aren't actors, but some of the greatest racing drivers of the era, such as Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Joakim Bonnier, Jochen Rindt, Juan Manuel Fangio, Bruce McLaren, Lorenzo Bandini, Jim Clark and Jo Siffert, and photojournalists John Bryson and Bernard Cahier, all of whom viewers may find hard to recognize, but add so much to the authentic feel of the film.

I watched the movie several times, checked out professional photographs and documentaries on the subject, and read articles, books, interviews and forums by motor sports experts, which identified a lot of the drivers.

And now I see IMDb has decided to delete all of them in one fell swoop! Why on earth?

They were all screen captures from the actual movie, so no copyright issues could be involved, and it's nowhere the case that these have been replaced with higher resolution images. Which I would have appreciated in theory if the uploader had taken the trouble of also copying the names of the actors. And of course all of these images were all okayed by the IMDb staff in the first place.

Moreover, watching Alan Whicker's BBC report on the set of the movie, I also uploaded unique shots from this, such as actor Yves Montand getting driving instructions from Phil Hill and Jim Russell, Montand chatting with Princess Gracia, and Brian Bedford having bloody make-up applied to his face. All of them have been removed too, leaving none at all.

Since I invested a lot of work in this, I request an explanation.

Hi @Richard_J -

I reviewed the title gallery and have reinstated the missing images.  They should be live again on the site shortly.  Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Michelle! Of course, I feel delighted and encouraged by this! By the way, the lower ones in the thumbnail grid with the distinct (too) blue overtones weren't mine, but fine all the same.

Still, perhaps you could give a reason why this massive deletion took place? To immediately assuage any concerns of naming and shaming, I mean generally speaking. Can somehow annoyed contributors have them all deleted at once? Did they appear to violate some IMDb policy or owner's copyright because of excessive numbers? I'd just like to know, and I suppose other users as well, to keep in mind for further contributions.

And of course, constructive contributors who find fault with some uncredited guest appearances, please feel free to add to them, discuss them or correct them!

Best regards,

Richard

Hi @Richard_J -

I was able to confirm that the images were incorrectly reported and removed by another contributor.  We have taken steps to help prevent any future recurrence of the issue.

I hope this helps!

I thought it was just my images that were being removed without cause. Did you discover this had happened after talking with me about my own similar trouble?
