Re: titles of characters for police/legal/medical/emergency dramas

Hi, I was wondering why some medical shows list character names with the "Dr." title—such as Chicago Hope and St. Elsewhere—while others like ER and Chicago Med do not. I understand IMDb has guidelines discouraging over-elaboration in character names, but isn’t there room for clarity without going overboard? For example, “Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent John Smith” is often shortened to “FBI SA John Smith,” and “New York City Police Department Detective John Smith” becomes just “Detective John Smith.” Similarly, legal dramas list characters as ADA Jane Doe or DA Jack McCoy, which is both concise and informative. Characters often introduce themselves as “Detective Smith” or “Agent Johnson,” so including titles like Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, ADA, EADA, or DA—as seen on Law & Order cast pages—helps viewers identify their roles at a glance. Trivia pages can then clarify any acronyms or ranks as needed. It would also be helpful if defense attorneys were clearly labeled on cast lists. That way, it's easier for users to identify who played key roles in specific episodes.

Hi DanDud88- Our first rule of thumb is that the character should be credited with the name that displays within the on-screen credits. Second, if the character name is not credited on-screen, they should follow this Help Guide and they should use the name the character is most commonly called on-screen: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/characters/GKLQVXKH7U8DATWX?ref_=helpsrall# Third, if there is no character name there should be a brief description (e.g., man on bike). If you are seeing over-embelished character names, you are welcome to submit the credit corrections with the respective supporting evidence for our editors to review and verify. Cheers!

@DanDud88- As mentioned above, if the character name is not credited on-screen, they should follow the Help Guide linked above and use the name the character is most commonly called on-screen. If there is no character name then there should be a brief description. If you encounter these incorrect character names listed, you can submit the respective corrections.
