Reported reviews
As someone who contributes to IMDB frequently, I have noticed many reviews that seem either painfully short (giving that IMDB has a character limit before posting is allowed) or offer hateful tirades about the star or director of any given film or TV show. Also, often times reviews are absolutely ridden with typos. I am sure that IMDB staff does not have time to read the massive number of reviews posted daily. I am assuming that the reviews are run through some kind of AI to flag inappropriate words, phrases, or comments. It's hard to understand how IMDB makes determinations regarding individual reviews, despite listing fairly comprehensive guidelines, which, it seems to me, are often ignored. That said, I have definitely reported any number of reviews for viciously attacking the star or making some hateful political comment. Indeed, those reviews should not be posted. At the same time, it is occurring to me that in my nearly 450 reviews, someone has decided that they didn't like what I said and reported the review. And yet, IMDB approved it. So, exactly how does that work? If IMDB approves it, then, it meets the guidelines? Or because the review ruffles someone's feathers, it is reported and then taken down without the author of the review knowing or being given a chance to edit their review? I can distinctly remember some reviews I have written, and now, it is occurring to me that they have been removed. I do not use foul language, and I make a strong effort to avoid CAPS, although sometimes I do. I will comment on whether I think the actor was capable of doing the job or not, but it is not my comment on them as a human being. Nonetheless, some reviews that had remained up for years now seem to have vanished. So, what I want to know is: why doesn't IMDB give the reviewer the option to edit their review instead of taking it down after someone reports it? It certainly seems that that is how this is being done. If someone takes the time to write a review, even if it is a 1-star review, and it is written intelligently, commenting on the story, the actors, the production values, etc., and it is approved by IMDB, but then later removed because someone didn't like it -- what is the point of posting anything but glowing reviews? IMDB needs to have a system in place where a reviewer is notified that their review will be taken down because it's been reported for the following reasons: A, B, C. The reviewer should be given the opportunity to rectify the review and repost it, not discover months or years later that the review, that they certainly put time and effort in, has now vanished. I really hope someone comments on this and puts forward this suggestion for future reporting incidents.
