Request for Technical Review of Unusual IMDb Weighted Rating Change

I’m requesting a technical review of the weighted rating for The Legend of Van Dorn (2026).

The film previously displayed a rating of approximately 7.6, which subsequently dropped to approximately 4.5 despite an increase of only two votes.

Currently, the film has 118 ratings, with an unweighted average of 6.6 but a displayed weighted rating of approximately 4.4.

The geographic breakdown reveals additional discrepancies. For example, 64 U.S. voters have given the film an unweighted average of 7.9, yet the weighted U.S. rating is 5.4.

I understand that IMDb uses a proprietary weighting system and may apply alternative calculations when unusual voting activity is detected. I also understand that IMDb does not disclose the specifics of its algorithm.

However, given the magnitude and suddenness of the change, I would appreciate clarification on two questions:

  1. Has the rating been reviewed to confirm that the weighting calculation is functioning correctly for this particular title?
  2. Has the possibility of unusual voting activity affecting the weighted result been examined?

I previously contacted IMDb support and was informed that the system was functioning as intended. However, that response did not address the unusually large change in the displayed rating.

I’m not requesting that IMDb disregard legitimate negative ratings or artificially increase the score. I’m simply requesting confirmation that the film’s rating has been properly evaluated and that any unusual voting activity has been handled appropriately.

I’ve attached screenshots showing the worldwide voting distribution, the U.S. voting distribution, and the film’s displayed IMDb rating. These illustrate the substantial differences between the unweighted averages and the weighted ratings. I’m providing them to help document the issue and facilitate a technical review.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi ndtodr!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Our voting system already detects and defeats attempts to stuff the ballot and skew the rating, as demonstrated by the difference between the weighted average and the arithmetic mean on the vast majority of titles in the database.

For additional information about IMDb ratings and weighted averages, please refer to our FAQ here: https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/ratings-faq/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV

Thank you, Fran. I understand that IMDb uses a weighted voting system to protect ratings from manipulation, and I appreciate those safeguards.

However, my request concerns a specific and unusually dramatic change in the rating for The Legend of Van Dorn, from approximately 7.6 to 4.5 with only two additional votes.

I understand why the weighted and unweighted averages may differ. My concern is the magnitude and suddenness of this particular change.

Could you please clarify whether the voting history and weighted calculation for this specific title have actually been examined by IMDb’s technical team, or whether your response is based on the general operation of the voting system?

I’m not asking for the algorithm to be disclosed or for the rating to be artificially adjusted. I’m simply requesting confirmation that this particular case has received an individual technical review.

Thank you again.
