What are the requirements to become an IMDb 'qualifying' film festival?

I have seen there are certain requirements to become an IMDb 'qualifying' film festival on this page: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/other-submission-guides/events/G9DXDPWT2TWSXP8U?ref_=helpsrall#

However, it also says on another page that a selective festival means that 'the ratio of submitted films to accepted films is at least 3:1'. Is this a requirement to becoming an IMDb 'qualifying' film festival and if so, does that ratio need to be met for every year it has been running?

Hello LeahPerky,

These are the requirements based on the Help Articles

  • Not already exist. Please check the Events list before submitting a request.

  • Be specifically centered around movies, TV, or video games. For example, a lifestyle magazine may include a 'film of the year' category in its annual award ceremony, but the Event itself is not centered on movies and is therefore not eligible at this time.
  • Be current. Historical Events are not eligible at this time.
  • Be established for more than 5 years.
  • Have an official website.
  • Have a well-established jury or method of selecting winners. For example, anyone can start a website with voting mechanisms, and any would-be critic can select their favourite movies of the year and announce them on their own website or social media profile - these Events are not eligible.
  • Have received regular international or national press coverage (wide or trade). For example, a nationally broadcast awards ceremony or a festival award winner announced in recognized trade or other media publications would be eligible for listing. An Event with only local news, social media, fan or blog coverage is not eligible for listing at this time.

If am missing anything, please give some more insight or the page that you are referring to, in order to take look for you! We will be glad to help.

Thank you.

On this page below it says, a selective festival means that 'the ratio of submitted films to accepted films is at least 3:1'.

Please can you confirm if this is an additional requirement and if it needs to apply to all the years the festival has been running?

The requirements that you are asking are specific to add a New Title. This does not interfere with adding a new Event.

The requirements to add a new Event are above and on the Help Article.

Thank you Fran.

Please can you explain what this section below is referring to in regards to a 'selective/qualifying festival' in the New Title page and how to become a selective festival?

  • What do you mean by "qualifying festival"?
Not all film festivals are created equal. Our criteria specify that a film must have been screened at a selective festival, i.e. a festival that doesn't accept everything regardless of its quality. "Selective" means that the ratio of submitted films to accepted films is at least 3:1. The festival must also be of sufficient stature and non-local relevance. For example, some ad hoc showcase in a little town to celebrate local talent is not a selective festival of the kind that gets you into IMDb.

@LeahPerky That paragraph (from https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/imdb-new-title-submission-faqs/G3GJJWKWRTHW62T5#) seems to be somewhat out of date. The standards for inclusion in IMDb are a lot less selective than they used to be.

It's my understanding that being shown at any film festival that holds screenings which are open to the public would nowadays be sufficient to qualify a film for inclusion in IMDb. The "ad hoc showcase in a little town" would nowadays be acceptable.

Hi @gromit82,

Thank you for highlighting this.

The Help article has now been updated to reflect the current guidance for festivals.

Cheers!
