1980s movie of a family that moves to the jungle?

I saw a movie when I was young of a clean-cut looking man with glasses who moves his family to some remote village in the jungle or on an island. I remember and old white-wooden church and he slowly discovers that something dark is going on in this village.

There is some sort of strange tower in the village that I remember being like open cubicles vaguely like the old "Hollywood Squares" gameshow set.

Towards the end of the movie there is a long sequence of explosions where this structure is destroyed. The main character is involved but I don't remember if he destroys it or is attempting to keep it from being destroyed.

This was probably a 1980s movie. I have been wondering what this movie was for years. I appreciate any help!
