That's the character Tateh, played by Mandy Patinkin; when he starts making movies, Tateh (a poor Jewish immigrant) uses the name Baron Ashkenazy to imply greater prestige than his modest background would receive.

@scgary66​ Excellent! Thanks, scgary66, for un-confusing me! Milos Forman, E.L. Doctorow, and crew had me totally confused. Patinkin's fractured English had me in stiches with his frantic directing style of a silent film, shouting at one and all. This movie reminded me a lot of the Coen brothers' later, "Hail, Caesar!".
