Can't remember the name of this movie

Hoping someone can help.  I've been searching the web for a movie I recall about some African American teenagers living in the American south(not certain of the time period).   Have had no luck at all.  I believe I watched this movie on HBO in the 80's.  I'm struggling to remember much of the plot so I can only offer aspects that I remember about it.  I would say it was a movie for adolescents.  It felt like a Disney movie.  I think it was a movie and not an after school special.  Although it aired on HBO in the 80's I don't know when it was made.  Could have been made in the 80's or wouldn't be surprised if it was made 20 years earlier.  It was in color.  As mentioned, it was about some African American teenagers in the south.  I don't recall the time period setting of the movie but many of the characters were dressed in just blue denim overalls.  The movie explored racial issues and I believe the main character was dating a white girl.  I recall the movie culminating in a fist fight between the main character and the antagonist.  Overall it was a good movie.  Hazy on many of the details so that's all I got.  Any ideas are appreciated!

Solved it myself if anyone cares.  The movie was called "The Learning Tree" from 1969 and starred Kyle Johnson.  I was watching a show on ABC last night called "Who Do You Believe?" about Nichelle Nichols from Star Trek.  The show was detailing the last 10 years of her life and a custody battle between her son, Kyle Johnson, and some guy.  Anyway, they mentioned her son tried acting and they flashed a picture up on the screen from when he was young and I noticed, that was the guy!  He was the main character in the movie I had been thinking about.  Anyway, I looked him up and found that he was the guy in The Learning Tree.  Case closed.  Whew.
