Find a children's book

Hello, a little off topic but with your collective tremendous wealth of knowledge, here goes. I'm searching for a book I read at primary school, cica 1960-1963. It was a story about animal friends who lived in the local wood. Fox was the boss, all had fun, the mole frequently got lost because he used a stone for a compass. It changed temperature for different directions. Later the gang found gypsies had caught a vixen, so all the animals ganged up to rescue her, with success, and they all live happily ever after...I recall line drawing of 2 foxes heads on the cover.
