Help ID'ing This Film...?

I have a very vivid memory of a film I caught being broadcast on some French TV channel while visiting as a young child. I'm hoping this might ring a bell with someone here. Here are the fragments I retained: The movie is old - definitely in B&W and focuses on a couple (husband & wife?) who are living in the countryside somewhere in a very large house or castle. An uninvited visitor shows up and overstays his welcome, cause a ton of turmoil between the couple. He may have been a thief or a squatter or something, but in my mind, the visitor in a stranger and creates a ton of tension. The film ends with the castle / giant home burning down - this is in my mind, the final shot of the movie. I know that's almost nothing to go on...but maybe it triggers something for you, masters of the internet. I would love any leads - it's haunted me for most of my life. Thank you in advance, Alex
