I'm looking for a movie

A movie is about an American soldier serving in some dangerous country who rescues a black boy and has an affair with a local doctor (I remember a very daring erotic scene involving these two). A soldier later in the movie gets seriously injured or even dies because his car hits a mine or something. I saw the movie a long time ago on TV, sometime in the late 90's, so it's definitely before 2000. Anyone know?
