Looking for a movie title

Black and white horror film with a sound recording that makes statues come alive. There's a professor character and a woman in it who I think is his wife and she gets kind of possessed. There's one scene where the gargoyle of the university come alive and chase the protagonist. I'm pretty sure the movie is British. I can't remember if the recording is words or just sounds.
