There is a 1979 movie called Joni, in which a girl becomes paralyzed after a swimming incident, but that is probably not it. A boy does become paralyzed in A Walk to Remember after a diving mishap, but that movie came out in 2002, it stars Mandy Moore. Either of these seem familiar?

I’ve been looking for this movie for years!! Immediately after the accident, in the hospital, the mom is very distraught and tells the dr, “maybe it will heal.”
