Name of a movie where Ben Gazzara possibly stars as a father with a drug-addicted son?

I remember seeing a scene where Ben Gazzara injects himself with drugs and then said "we're going to have a great time" to try to cause a reaction in his son to change.  I don't know if Valeria Golino stars in this movie as well but I was starting to look at her filmography and haven't found anything so far. There's another scene (but don't know if it's before or after the one mentioned above) where the son appears to be cleaned up but also happy and they're having dinner, possibly christmas dinner.  

I'm not sure in what year the film was made but it could have been filmed in the '70s.
