Need help finding a revenge/horror/thriller flick from the 80's. Recommendations welcomed!

Hello, I need help finding an 80's horror film I watched as a kid. From what I remember, the primary plot in the movie involved a couple (boyfriend & girlfriend) walking home through a bad area of town. They were attacked by a gang of thugs. I believe the girlfriend was abused and her boyfriend was beaten and burned. Then the movie fast-forwarded to the future I think the girlfriend had a new boyfriend but suffered from PTSD. She had recurring dreams of being abused by some of the thugs. Her boyfriend didn't die from the attack and he begins to get revenge on the degenerates who burt him and his girl. He only did it in the shadows because he was ashamed to let his face be seen because the attack left him horribly disfigured. I remember the movie ending with the boyfriend in an alley after doing away with the last of the garbage beings who hurt him and his girlfriend beckoning him to come to her because it was obvious he was hiding. He ran from her, she called after him, then broke down crying. That's how I remember it ending. By the way, someone suggested *Darkman* to me, but unfortunately that wasn't it.
