Help identify this move, about a gay gigolo working in (I think LA) who gets into a relationship with a girl, but is entangled with a straight-acting  athlete who invites him to live with him.  The young chap seems to like painting, and paints a hug mural on his wall depicting Alexander the Great

I don't remember the scene you are talking about and some of the plot lines don't match, but there is a movie titled 'A Different Story' from 1978 at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077435 that sounds like it could be it.
