[TOMT][MOVIE][90s/2000s] TV movie about a young man scamming elderly people for funeral money, befriending an old woman
Hi! I’m trying to remember the title of an obscure movie I saw on TV in the late 90s or early 2000s (probably between 1997–2002). It might have been a TV movie (Lifetime, Hallmark, or CBS Sunday night movie). Plot summary (as best as I can recall): • A young white man works for a company that collects money from lonely elderly people to pay for coffins or proper burial services. • He knows it’s a scam: the company never intends to provide the funeral/burial service; they just steal the money. • He befriends one of the victims: an elderly African American woman who is kind, lonely, and very trusting. • Over time, he feels guilty for deceiving her. • She tells him that she has never seen the ocean (or the sea). • Near the end of the film, he redeems himself a bit by taking her to see the ocean for the first time. • After visiting the ocean, she dies (or passes away soon after). Setting: • Small town (not a big city) • The movie had a sad but somewhat heartwarming tone — a redemption story • Likely an American TV drama • Aired late at night I’ve searched everywhere (IMDb, TV movies lists) and can’t find anything. If anyone remembers the title or any actor, director, or detail, I’d be super grateful! Thank you!
