TV Movie 1986 - 1991

I need help remembering the title of an American TV movie I saw on either the CBS Sunday or Tuesday night movie in the late 80s. The lead character was a rugged white male mid to late 20s. His girlfriend (maybe wife) gives birth to his son and out of malice she has the child adopted in a closed adoption. The movie is about his quest to get his son back. I think the movie takes place on the eastern seaboard, maybe Massachusetts. The main scene I recall is halfway through the movie the young man tracks down the only lead he has - a man who knows where the child is. There’s a chase sequence onto a jetty high above the rocks and water, and the man who knows where the kid is slips and falls to his death before he can reveal anything. I would appreciate any help getting the title.
