In Progress

Slow loading lists (freezing, too)

I don’t think the app can handle large lists very well. When trying to view large (lengthy) lists, the app freezes. After about two to three minutes, I’ll either get a “network error” message or the list might eventually load, but plagued with severe lagging. After using IMDb for 25+ years, some of my lists have nearly 10,000 titles. The problem appears to be that it’s trying to load the *entire* list at once. I’d like to see this redesigned by showing only the first 20 or so titles (then loading an additional 20 titles when (and only when) I scroll to the end of a batch.

@troywindhorst Thanks for the feedback. I am in the same boat as you with several large lists and a 16K+ ratings history. The team are aware of the issue, which is due to a recent back-end migration, and we are actively working on solutions. They are making excellent progress in the early test versions to which I have access, ahead of a public app release.

Cool. I appreciate the info. As always, I imagine it’s a delicate balance between providing so much data all while avoiding the lag gremlins. Kudos to the IMDb team. Thank you, sir!

Hi All, Has anyone else experienced noticeable lag when searching or rating on IMDb? I would say this started about 6-12 months ago. Occasionally, a search or ousting a rating will be almost instant but, more often than not, it can take around 30 seconds for the page to load. I’ve also noticed blanks where the actors’ credits should be, or the plot outline. I’ve uninstalled & reinstalled the app several times. It’s not my internet, as other apps & sites are fine. I suspect IMDb have done something with their servers, & demand is causing lag (it’s often during the early hours of the morning in the UK). Thanks for reading. @Paul1 Thanks for the feedback here. In reference to the separate thread at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdb-app-iphone-ipad/slow-loading-lists-freezing-too/68d7434fd6b94e4d33624608 may we ask how many titles (approximately is fine) have you rated? We have a fix in testing related to slow performance on large lists and for customers with large numbers of ratings (of which I am also one).

Hi Col, Thanks for the reply & link. I don’t seem to see ‘network error’ as the contributor in the link mentions, mine is just slow-loading of pages & acting credit columns, sometimes plot outlines too. After 25+ years since becoming an IMDb member, I’ve got 17000 ratings & about 4500 in my favourite actors list, which probably doesn’t help…! Thanks again. Paul

@Paul1 Thanks for the details; these are all part of the same issue relating to the size of your ratings (I have 16,500+) and we are working on solutions at the moment. We have merged your post into the main thread for the problem.

@Paul1 & @troywindhorst The first set of speed improvements for large lists and ratings are in version 16.0 of our iOS which is now available for download from the Apple App Store. Further refinements are in-progress for 16.1 but do let us know how things go with 16.0. Thanks.

Thanks for checking in. It may be a tad better, but still not ideal. I didn’t measure the time on the previous 15.x version, so I can’t compare. This is what I measured today on 16.0. iPadOS (18.6.2) averaged about 1 min 30 sec. iOS (18.6.2) averaged about 2 min 20 sec. The iPad did better. Not sure why. Both devices are 8MB of RAM. I believe processors are different, so that may play a role. My watch history is less than yours, but still chunky (10,500). It’s still loading all titles at once—and that seems to be the delay.

CORRECTION: I had only updated the IMDb app on my iPhone. Turns out, I had not updated yet on my iPad, so I did have the opportunity to compare apples to apples. As mentioned previously, my iPad tests were averaging 1:30 and that was still on IMDb 15.x. I updated to 16.0 and got the same 1:30 average (almost to the second each time). Just FYI if it helps.

@troywindhorst Thanks for the detailed testing. This feedback is really helpful! Release 16.0 focused on reducing network errors and freezes, with performance improvements for loading the 'You' page. We're also redesigning how Search on large lists (e.g. Ratings and Watch History pages) work to make them load more efficiently. We understand your frustrations and appreciate your patience as we continue working on this.
