In June 2026, the editors at IMDb compiled a list detailing the top 20 horror movies ranked by their worldwide box office ($300M+). These companion poll lists detail the top-grossing North American released horror movies, but adjusted for inflation. The pair of lists uses total box office tickets sold (estimated), instead of using box office sales ($), as a constant measure to compare films across different decades. Domestic box office totals are used due to more reliable and consistent reporting over a longer historical period than worldwide box office totals.

urbanemovies: Could you please check on House of Wax (2005) being listed as having over 50 million tickets sold in North America? The total gross in the U.S. and Canada for that film was approximately $32 million as shown on the film's page on both the regular IMDb site and Box Office Mojo.
As indicated by MPA statistics here (see p. 25), the average ticket price in the U.S. in 2005 was $6.41, meaning that House of Wax should probably have about 5 million+ tickets sold, not 50 million+.

Interesting numbers. I wonder how much lower The Rocky Horror Picture Show would rank if you removed all of the years of midnight movies to see (and participate in) this film? I seem to remember it being a bomb when it came out. It was, however, later fun to act it out in the auditoriums, throwing toast and everything.
I also remember that the 1976 version of King Kong was considered a box office disappointment, even though my brother and I enjoyed it when we saw it in the theatre, but it also makes the list. Jessica Lange was ripped for her acting and they said she had no talent, but a few years later she was being nominated for multiple Oscars.
