Info to Poll Makers

Hi,

Here is some helpful information to anyone who makes poll suggestions.

The polls were redesigned in June 2025, and the modernized polls came with a lot of changes. Please take the time to read this information.

 • Long intro texts are no longer cut off. The whole intro text will be visible in the poll.

Example: https://www.imdb.com/poll/SL9NHReJRWg/

 • Pressing the Enter key automatically saves the edits. To get to the next line, press Shift + Enter.

 •  The word wrap issue now appears to be solved, so adding a blank line between different rows of text in list descriptions is no longer necessary. This means that the text in your list descriptions will look exactly the same in the poll.

Example:

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls562533295/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/mHI_cCI3qs8/

 • The word wrap issue is solved for text in the descriptions, but in the introduction, different rows of text will wrap if they are not separated by a blank line.

Example:

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4106918589/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/4WaXYCvjDwfj8T9C2bSCCQ/

Notice how the question and link is placed directly under the text in the list, but appears to the right of the text in the poll.

This is how it looks with a blank line inbetween different rows of text:

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4117452103/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/R8EmZt2tLcXBbgadDqu5AA/

 • Bullet points ( • ) and dashed points ( - ) are now OK to use in list descriptions.

Example: https://www.imdb.com/poll/SalAAUmDWWyvpmIkOEl1Tw/

 •  Color is no longer available in polls, so no need to use color tags in your list. [blue]blue text[/blue]
 • However, bolded and italic text can still be used: bold italics

 • Please do not use spoiler tags in the options, as it will be impossible to see the hidden text before voting.
spoiler alert
Example: https://www.imdb.com/poll/bkd02et1xOc/

 •  Links in poll options are not clickable until you view the poll results

 •  When making an image list, it's always good to add captions (titles, character names etc.). Otherwise, if an image disappears from the poll, it's hard for the poll taker to know what the option was. Example: https://m.imdb.com/poll/sYdNWZZlG0w/

 •  External links to other sites in the poll text are not allowed anymore. If there is an external link in a list you haven't edited in a long time, the link will stay as long as you don't edit the list text.

 • In the list title, use single quotation marks for movie titles and double quotation marks for TV show titles ( 'The Godfather' / "Breaking Bad" )

 •  When mentioning a movie, TV show or person in the list intro, it's good to add a link to the IMDb page:

Examples:

[link=nm0000949] (name link for Cate Blanchett)

[link=tt1475582] (title link for the TV series Sherlock)

[link=tt0068646] (title link for the movie The Godfather)

 •  Once your list has become a poll, DO NOT delete the list. If you delete the list, you can never make any updates to your poll.

Reminder: Re-pushing a poll

A live poll can be updated (re-pushed) to add one or more options to the poll (max 35).

Always add the new option at the end of the list, and do not change the order of the choices in the list.

It is recommended to include a note with the day's date, so voters can see that the option was added after the poll was published.

Request the re-push in this thread: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdb-poll/faq-poll-authors-repush-requests/5f4a7ad08815453dbabc3d05?page=177

perhaps you could add in your own words: external links to Youtube/Wikipedia/etc in the poll text are not allowed anymore... Old links in old lists can elude the new IMDb design (do not try to edit the text!), but new texts with new links will be urged to be removed.

This is very helpful, Jess; thank you so much! I definitely plan to start looking through my polls for missing images. If you and the other Betas start getting a lot of re-push requests, please let me know if I can help. : )

Hi Jess, do you happen to know if anything at all appears in the poll when an image is missing? (For example, a box with a "?" in it or anything at all to indicate that there's something missing.) I've been looking into this and I've found polls in which it seems an image is missing because there are more options in the results of the poll than there are in the poll itself. The confusing part, however, is that, in the ones I've seen so far, all of the images are shown in the results of the poll. If anyone has any information on this at all, I'd be very appreciative. I'm having a really hard time finding polls of mine with missing images (in fact, so far I've found none) but I know I have several because I remember seeing, before the changes occurred, seeing missing images in several polls of mine. Thank you so much!

In some of my polls are images missing, which I can't restore, because they also lack in the list with no wildcard image. They simply disapear completely.

For example, this old Michael Stuhlbarg Face-Off had three options, but displays only two. If you click to edit the list it likely shows that the third item does not exist. https://www.imdb.com/poll/jv68pCmxxqQ/ https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023078009/ If you share the confusing cases, perhaps we can figure it out.

I'm not sure how there can be more options in the results than the poll itself, but the results show the order of the votes, and if there is a number missing, you know there is an image missing. Like in this poll, where three numbers are missing in the results: https://www.imdb.com/poll/sYdNWZZlG0w/?view=results But you have to edit the list to see which image is missing, or look in the archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20250316113752/https://www.imdb.com/poll/jv68pCmxxqQ/ Also, the staff is working on fixing this, so hopefully we will be able to "see" the missing images again soon.

@Breumaster I think the missing image polls are very fixable, but agree it is harder to quickly see what is missing since the re-design.

I am having less missing image issues than a couple years ago, when IMDb purged a lot of the duplicate and low-quality images from their photo galleries, and upped the resolution requirement for submissions. I pre-emptively make sure I am putting high-res, well shot, and iconic images that lack duplicates from the title's photo gallery in my polls, These types of images are less likely to be removed in the first place and you will have less polls to fix as a result. But, I estimate < 2.5% of my polls lose images each year, down from a peak of 10% each year a few years back and that problem can build to become a huge problem, if you let it slide for a couple years.

1) you can find the missing text by scrolling through the images on the list,

2) find a replacement image,

3) then cut-n-paste the text onto a replacement image,

4) putting the replacement into the same order spot as the missing image,

5) delete the missing image option

6) request a re-push

@urbanemovies

Breumaster was referring to a period after the redesign when options disappeared from the poll if an image had been deleted. We couldn't even see an empty box with a question mark as we do now; the option just vanished from the poll - thankfully, this was fixed.

The number of votes on polls has dramatically increased since the redesign. Is anyone else experiencing the same on their polls ?

It could just be me; I haven’t checked all the polls in the past couple of weeks.

@KirkPicard, is it possible that you may have a had more featured polls and that accounts for the boost in your rate or in your total votes?

There are a lot of outdated things there.

@Peter_pbn

There are also a lot of helpful things. Some links are outdated, but he can't really update the list.

@Jessica

I have one thing that goes on my nerve.

I the edit link window, there is and option at the bottom which says
"open link in current window", which can be changed to "open link in new window" by pull down menu. I wish the standart option would be "open link in new window", which could be changed into "open link in current window, if someone prefers that. I sometimes open with several open tabs in browser. For me it's no hurdle to open an additional window, but it goes on my nerves when I open someone's link and the current content disappears by that click. Sure I can use the back button to get back and I still be logged in, but then the linked page is not. If both stay parallel in my browser I can swith between them easily and can also switch to any other tab easily, instantly. I know that problem seems to be no problem, but it slightly breaks my workflow. Especially because other users don't mind letting it stay at "open link in current window". 10 tabs open? No prob for me.
