Maybe, it would be a good idea to add the word, trilogy. So, it reads J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. I think that sometimes people use the term, Lord of the Rings to describe the entire middle-earth franchise (including The Hobbit) or incorrectly use the terms interchangerably. That way it wouldn't be necessary to exclude the The Hobbit (1977) for those that use the term that way to describe the broader middle-earth franchise. In that case, poll takers maybe looking for the 1977 animated film as an answer option.
