Very minor spoilers:

The Martian is overrated.I have not yet seen Project Hail Mary, but I read the book, and it has STAKES and HEART that The Martian sorely lacks. I'll get back to you next week.

@NYVKE IMHO, both were excellent novels and films. I am guessing you think 'The Martian' is good, but doesn't live up to the over hype it may have or was perceived to have received. I thought in particular, the novels by Andy Weir and screenplays by Drew Goddard excelled at telling a complex story in an entertaining way without dumbing down the material and getting the science fiction details right.

@urbanemovies

The Martian is pure competence porn.

PHM has that, plus REAL STAKES and HEART. At least the book did. Movie soon.

@NYVKE I gotta think you are going to be dissapointed in PHM (currently #87 on the IMDb movie Top 250), as both these film are so similiar,  and closely rated with 8.0 vs. 8.5 IMDb user ratings and 80 vs. 77 MetaCritic scores.

I personally like 'The Martian' a little better, but was not even sure the difference was a full rating point (8/10 vs. 9/10). I fully expect PHM to drop to a 8.0 rating, once it is seen by a wider audience and gets a million IMDb user ratings.

Project Hail Mary was both TOO long and not long enough. It sped through too many subplots that were ironically way too long in the book. Not a terrible movie by any stretch, but won't likely hit my top 10 or 20 favorite from this year. BTW for context: I liked a fair amount of the book but ended hating its way too long ass.

Admittedly, I haven't seen The Martian since it came out over 10 years ago. That gets my mild default vote.
