Any suggestions of notable self-published or author-financed fictional works that may or may not have a film adaptation?

"'Ulysses', a modernist novel by James Joyce was self-published partially* between 1918 and 1920 in The Little Review, an American avant-garde literary magazine." Why would that be considered self-publishing?

I included the title mostly on the basis that it listed on several lists, as self-published, although none of them detail the basis for their claim to my satisfaction. (i.e. "10 Classic Novels That Were Originally Self-Published"). I assume that either the financing of the publication, mostly through pre-orders or subscriptions sold by Joyce through the Shakespeare & Company bookshop in Paris, which had also arranged for the book to be printed in France (Joyce retained the publication rights of the novel.) or the non-payment serialization of chapters of the novel for publication in an American literary magazine were the basis for the claims. I would assume that the method of publication, the non-payment for the work's rights, who owns the publication rights in the end and who funds the costs of publication are the main factors in determining whether a work is a self-publication. This particular work checks several boxes, but some of them are unconventional and I agree the claim is a bit grey, based on the known facts, as I can't prove or dissprove the claim. However, I do find it does lean more to supporting the claim of being a self-published work.
