Live Poll: Halloween Symbols

Intro: The roots of Halloween go back to ancient tribes in the British Isles. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III set November 1 as All Saints’ Day, and the evening before was called “All Hallows’ Evening.” Over time, this shortened to “Halloween.” In the 19th century, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought it to America, where it grew into today’s global celebration full of symbols and customs. Which of these items, monsters, customs or animals do you most associate with Halloween? Slideshow Please scare us here. Suggestion: Like in the intro described and please consider if your suggested option is too close to another. List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4106036528/ Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/QEVIiV69IC-LVPzgrD6K3g/

I think even for Halloween, Trump is a little heavy. ;) candies is a very good pick. I've put it on the list. We already searched for it, but didn't remember that movie. Hangman - no. Maybe if you have a Halloween-movie connected movie image. But that really doesn't fit at all. Evil nun is also not what I had in mind. I'd count it to horror movie fan disguise, which I've put on the list with your suggestion of Jason's mask. Goblins is already on the list within the option of werewolf / monster. Thank you for suggesting.

I've put your suggestion on the list. Just put in a better image. Maybe there is still a better image, then I'll put that in the option.

Still searching for a better image of a bat. A not sooo Batman-ish one.

Please correct #13: recognizable The title differs from the question. Perhaps "Halloween Symbols" would be sufficient?

Hi Breu, great Halloween poll! In option 13, symbolical isn't a word: It's just symbolic without the "al," although I noticed that you don't have masks and/or costumes anywhere. Could this image be for masks? Or masks and costumes? I was wondering if by "recognizable horror movie fan disguise," you meant mask?

I used it as term for an superordinate concept. ... or is it callid "topic" ... or would you rather call it "preamble" or "Generic term"? When I put in "Oberbegriff" in the dictionary, I get four options. I said fan disguise, because it should be a collective term for all kinds of fan disguise: masks, capes, mantles, cloaks, wigs, plastic nose and glasses, whatever. I still struggle much with such word-endings: I often don't get if should say: "...ic", "...ical" or "ically". Then I throw a dice, look what happens and try to understand. I must admit I'm tempted to ask GPT, but first I try to get it myself. ;) I've cut the word to "symbolic". I said "symbolic", because the disguise often points out to special characters like Jason (hockey mask), Joker (green hair and smeered lipstick), or vampire teeth. Maybe the guy or gal has a scythe, which should tell he/she is a Grim Reaper inpersonater.

Hi Breu, "capes, mantles, cloaks, wigs, plastic nose and glasses" would all fall under the word "costume." Even "mask" falls under the word "costume," although I would suggest using both words because it's more precise and sometimes people will wear a mask, foregoing anything else, because it's easier. It's ultimately your call, of course, but I strongly suggest "masks and costumes:" In North American English, which is what is most often spoken globally, they are probably the first two words that immediately come to mind when someone hears "Halloween." They are immediately recognizable: English speakers, also including speakers of British English, will immediately know exactly what you mean. I doubt anyone will immediately know what is meant by "Recognizable symbolic horror movie fan disguise." They'll have to think about it, which requires time and patience; I'm guessing most people don't want to spend much of either on IMDb polls. If and when they do figure it out, "movie fan" disguise cuts out a whole lot of masks and costumes. Finally, most costumes, specifically masks, are not symbolic. (A symbolic costume would be, for example, taping newspapers all over oneself and explaining "I'm a newspaper stand," lol.) Perhaps a compromise option would be to just use the word "Disguises." But of course it is your decision. : ) ps: "I often don't get if should say: "...ic", "...ical" or "ically". Then I throw a dice..." Throwing a dice is a pretty good bet, lol. There is some "rhyme or reason" determining the use of "Ic" versus "ical" but it is ridiculously complex and has so many exceptions, of course, because the English language loves exceptions, lol. Most native speakers don't know those reasons and rely on intuition or simply knowing the usage for specific words by hearing them so much. English is so strange that way. The one upside is that adding "ly" almost always makes a word an adverb instead of an adjective so limiting the guess to "ic" or "ical" or probably pretty safe. 'Not much help, I know. : )

Thank you for explaining, Ruby. In fact German language is even more complex so I don't envy to learn it as a non-native speaker. Even many Germans aren't able to speak correct. Still we understand them, somehow. It often is the problem to go go down to a lower level to understand the person who doesn't speak proper. To make it easy for English speakers I will change it to costumes and make-up. Thank you, Ruby. :D

Breu, perhaps it would be better to start the text in the options with a capital letter.

I wondered no one says anything. So I took it as "that woud be ok, too." ;) I'll change it.

If no one has any more comments, then yes. It was a minor detail but if it can be corrected it looks better.

@Breumaster, Thank you for making the edit. In my humble opinion, Starting each of the captions with a capital letter looks better.

I do really like this poll a lot! I can't wait to vote. I can't get into my IMDb account right now due to technical issues that Dan couldn't even identify immediately so I'll have to wait until tomorrow so I can sleep now. But I look forward to voting! Thanks for making such a fun poll, Breu! Hope you have a good day over there in that beautiful country where Trump isn't a leader, lol.

Ruby, I hope you are well over there. I know that several people do have severe problems with your government, not just hispanics, but also LGBTQI+ people and kicked public servants. Of course the pupils in school (bowling for Columbine) and so on. That's all a little "un-nice" how the orange would say. Randy Rainbow says that's better called mean. Sounds better than "un-nice". Our own leaders are in a forced position. They have to kneel for him, because of the O.T.A.N forces you have, there. Maybe we'll need them later. When our gov continues like they do at the moment, we could face trouble like you in about three and a half year. For me at the moment it looks like they prepare it. Germany still is a good, save place to be. Free healthcare (according to what you pay, just a little ammount). No one has to suffer hunger, if he uses his brain just a little. Till then. Sleep tight. :D
