@eagles90 Um...? I don't want to yuck your cinematic yum. But I have a question for your answer. Are you answering 12 Years a Slave as a favorite or best? I'm curious. It's a well-made film. But I hold the same sentiment when people claim Schindler's List as their favorite film. For me? My favorite films involve a level of ... enjoyment (and their rewatchability) more than respect for the craft. And I have enjoyed many bleak and dark films in my lifetime but with 12 Years a Slave and the likes of Schindler's List? I'm certain I'll ever rewatch either.
And as I stated? I'm merely curious on why that particular film and what metrics you'd possibly use to make it your choice.

I hope favorite is meant by considering the quality of the movie. I also thought I'd pick 'Schindler's List' by considering the aspect of quality, but for me it was clear that someone would misunderstand it.
So I picked 'Avengers: Endgame' because of the monsterous big entertainment it is. There is all in it. Drama, comedy, action, war, science fiction in a big meltdown-ending of more than 20 movies. The impact of the whole franchise was gigantic and all the ties came together in that movie. I still remember how it was like waiting for it. Pure tension! And then ... *snap* !!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed 'Schindler's List' was the most depressing movie I ever saw in cinema. I felt shame crawling up my neck for what happened here in Germany and also outside in Poland and in the other parts of Europe.
The quality of the experiencing the movie first time was the most intense movie experience I ever had. Mindblowing, several ways harder to take as e.g. 'Saving Private Ryan' or 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Schindler's List is a majestic piece of art, telling the truth of the Holocaust in its most authentic and depressing way; it was moving ... with a touch of hope. It surely is more than just a movie.
I think sometimes it is - especially for exaggeratingly experienced movie watchers - hard to not think of the quality aspect, when it comes to favorite movies. For cinematic JOY (!) I would always pick more entertaining movies.
I know this sounds like semantics, but you have two conflicting questions (implied) in your suggestion. The favorite in the title and best in the question.
As for my answer? I'm a coward. Or my brain doesn't work like that. I can't definitively pick an answer for either best or favorite as it depends on my mood and current state of memory recall (basically closer to arbitrary response than a set determined answer.
For the sake of this poll? I'll choose Princess Mononoke (1997), my first Hayao Miyazaki film and barring any misremembering, my first anime film seen at a movie theater. My anime film experiences prior to that were from VHS and DVD rentals (with a rare Adult Swim cable viewing scattered around a bit).
I guess I saw 'Transformers' 7-8 times in cinema, all-in-all about 70 times. It was a big fun for me at that time. But still Avengers: Endgame is the most bombastic fun. Very more professional. And even though I saw it only twice in cinema, I like it better. It really was a big deal to build up the MCU. They did well. I especially like the ties between the movies.
When I was a teenager, I did a "Day with the Apes" marathon with my father at a local theatre. It was just my father and I watching movies together. It was my favorite time ever in a movie theatre and those films hold a special place in my heart.
We saw each of the five original Planet of the Apes films.
They were:
The Planet of the Apes (1968)
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
Even though I eventually worked in a movie theatre for years and saw thousands of films, the original Planet of the Apes is still my favorite because of the time spent with Dad.
