Live Poll: IMDb Poll Board First Films Seen in a Theater

Poll authors and other members of the IMDb Poll Board have a variety of experience in the films they have seen. This is a list of the first films that IMDb Poll Board users remember seeing in theaters.

Which of these first films do you find most intriguing or unexpected?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls085384599/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/71OuuHBez1w/

Ground Rules
1. Poll authors, other contributors to the IMDb Poll Board, IMDb champions and IMDb employees may contribute to this poll.
2. For the purposes of this poll the first film must be seen in an indoor theater, drive-in theater or during a public performance.
3. Films nominated multiple times will be listed once with all nominators mentioned for that film.
4. Feature films, documentaries and shorts are eligible.
5. Films are not limited to English language films.
6. Each user’s nominated film is their best recollection of the first film they remember seeing.
7. This poll will be considered ready when it reaches 25 choices.
8. Additional choices will be added if/when this poll goes live. If more than 35 films are suggested, a part two will be available.

My best guess would be Anastasia. I thought it was Bug's Life but Anastasia came out a year prior and I have a memory of seeing it in the theater.

I'm so old that my answer is The Ten Commandments. I should clarify that I'm referring to the 1956 movie, not Moses' original delivery.

LOL, and cool that you saw that film on the big screen.  I'm sure it was even more amazing that way.

Mark Glass,

Thanks. I added The Ten Commandments (1956).

I'm happy to see that one of your contributions have been incorporated in a poll suggestion.

In theory, I could have seen The Ten Commandments in a theater when I was 2 years old, but if I did, I certainly don't remember it.

Narnia,

The Tivoli Theater in University City, showed a lot of older films when they were open. They are temporarily closed due to COVID-19.

Fathom Event in conjunction with TCM shows older films in theaters. They showed The Ten Commands in 2016:

Maybe they will show it again.

The Tivoli is a fine venue for indie and international films, as well as vintage offerings.
As to the Commandments debut, I was 8 and it was Passover, so we had to bring our own lousy hard candies instead of getting savory buttered popcorn. But the spectacle was quite impressive.

DC,

Thanks. I added Jurassic Park (1993).

You just confirmed that you are younger than my younger daughter. Suddenly, I feel very old.

Dan, shouldn't it be a movie we remember seeing?

Jessica,

You are correct. I missed that in DC's response.
This is a list of the first films that IMDb Poll Board users remember seeing in theaters.
DC,

Do you recall the first film you remember seeing? Thanks.

Anaconda
Chachi 420
Jurassic Park 2 (Lost World)
Titanic
Evil Dead 2

All these five at the same time frame I can remember. Not sure which one was the first.

Among these, the experience of watching Titanic and Evil Dead 2 is still shining in my memory. While watching Evil Dead 2 I covered my eyes more than half of the screen time. And, while watching Titanic I cried a lot. It has been almost 23 years, but still it is my favorite movie of all time.

I saw my first when I was 4 years old and I still remember the glimpse of child actors.

Hollywood movies were off limit for most of my childhood and watching them in theaters was off off-limit mostly due to unavailability. I was in college when they were releasing Hollywood movies more regularly and MI 4 was the standard blockbuster substantial movie.

Brijesh Marand,

Thanks. I added Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).

I am not restricting this poll to English language films. In fact, I'm hoping to include many non-English films in this poll if they are the first film seen in by a user. One of my purposes in creating this poll is to illustrate the diversity of poll authors and people who vote in IMDb polls.

Brijesh Marand,

Since you raised the issue, I added this ground rule:
5. Films are not limited to English language films.

Funny thing: I still can't identify the first movie I saw in a theater. It was a Swedish kids movie about chess.
I will research it again and hopefully identify it for the sake of this plot. :)

UPDATE: After all those years, it took minutes to find it!
Lang leve de koningin (1995)

It's not Swedish, but Dutch. I saw it in 1999 and it was a special screening for several school groups.

The oldest movie I can remember is Dumb and Dumber (1994). Then I was 14 years old. But this wasn’t the first. Sadly I can’t remember an older movie. I definitely saw a few before. I will think about it and search in my old school agendas. Hopefully I will find an older one.

Yes!! I have found one in my ‘88/‘89 school diary. I have seen Moonwalker (1988) in theater.

Thanks. I added Bambi (1942).

I still cry when I watch Bambi. I also cry when I watch The Yearling (1946).
