Live Poll: IMDb - The Ignition of Online Movie Fandom

Intro: Launched on October 17, 1990, by Col Needham, IMDb grew from a fan’s code experiment into the definitive source for film, TV, and game information. Today it serves hundreds of millions worldwide, uniting fans and professionals through cast and crew data, ratings, reviews, trivia, and industry analytics. Needham’s vision and leadership carried IMDb from a volunteer project to an Amazon-owned powerhouse, essential to the global entertainment ecosystem. More than a database, it’s where online movie fandom found its spark - and never went dark. What do you value most about IMDb? Please discuss here. Suggestions: Feel free telling what you most value on IMDb. Depending on how different it is regarding to the other points on the list, I'll consider to put it on the list. It would be a honor for me to see beside GabrielFox's idea: https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdb-poll/poll-suggestion-imdbs-35th-anniversary/68e643806c7147011233c64c List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4155726561/ Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/x4BKOoVgOEYq_gaSiUKwAg/

It is going to be difficult to choose just one... I like to look for dates, facts, places, other roles...

I think the polls deserve a higher position in the list.

Since there are a few hundret million visits on the page and just a few hundret poll votes a day, I decided to put it on position 23. But the people who vote visit the polls, so I've put it on 10th position. Do you think that is ok, od do you have a special idea where it should be?

That's fine. :) I just think since they're already located at the bottom right corner on the IMDb menu, there's no need to have them at the bottom of your list.

FYI, I found a similar poll from ten years ago: https://www.imdb.com/poll/DH9_wHY5lEo/

Did movie fandom start with IMDb? When did Star Wars come out?

What do you suggest?

Perhaps you could moderate the statement by adding "internet" or "online": it’s where online movie fandom found its spark

Good idea. I've changed it. Would you think I should also do that to the title?

This poll is done incredibly well, Breu, and written extraordinarily well. Bravo. (And of course I'm in awe of your second language skills. Wow.)

Thank you, Ruby. :D I guess it would be best released at October 17 or short afterwards.

P.S.: To not force a false impression, Ruby. I wrote the text in aproximately that lenght and then let it optimize a little by chatgpt. I took a part of what I wrote but changed a few words I didn't have on my radar. Especially when it comes to some common formulations, I'm ailing a little and sometimes I must take the dictionary to find the best words. But all-in-all, my language skills improved a little faster with using chatgpt, by comparing my words with its wording. So I see better ways to express something - and that gave me a little boost to get better. This posting was written completely without chatgpt. I think it's a good tool, if one uses it proper and not with blind trust. I also saw by some researches that chatgpt does fail when it has too less facts to work with or often tries to give a pleasing answere when there is none. Then it sounds good by reading first, but when thinking closer there might be gaps which have to be filled by answeres to further enhancements in the user's question. There might even be fitting questions about real events, but with wrong results. I asked about a Sir-Mix-A-Lot commercial in the movie 'Falling Down' (1992). Chatgpt gave me an answere about a poster in the scene with the phone box, but there wasn't a poster. I asked again with enhanced parameters. I told it, that it might be a big brown plastic b.u.t.t in the background of the phone box. chatgpt made a wider research and found out that it was a campain of his record company for his new record and even told me the correct measures of the plastic thing. With dates of the campain and so on. But first gpt told me about a poster. It's a tool to use with brain. Don't trust it blind, but anyway it's way more efficient than Google.

P.P.s: I think it's ok to use it for preventing texts that have to be corrected 20 times. I think it's a blessing for us. The ideas still have to be thought, the options still have to be figured out. The images still have to be found and compared (which is better). I think it doesn't make creativity itself more easy, but it makes the work on creativity more easy. I made an experiment a while ago to figure out, if chatgpt could write me a script for a movie. I've set the data of the story and was surprised how gpt would mix it up. It felt good at first, but thinking closer, the story wasn't really good. gpt has not the emotional abilities to understand the characters' issues from the view of humans. There it fails. I'm sure it can't really write good scripts for screen. The human factor, the feeling misses. Anyway it was no serious attempt for writing a script. I was just curios about, because of the writer strikes in Hollywood. But I think they can lean back. These will not be good scripts on a drama-base.

1. Polls 2. Keeping track of the movies I watch - via lists and ratings 3. Researching cast and filmmakers Dishonorable Mentions: Those colossally oversized dropdown ads that cover a third or more of the screen that take way too long to retract.

That's our times. Everything has to be stuffed with commercials. If I would buy that all, join all, submit all, I'd be paying back for a few hundret thousands of years. I also voted for polls. Madame Breu voted for cast informations.
