Due to increasing crime and urban decay in my country, these types of cinemas all but disappeared by the mid to late 90s.
We have 2 large and 1 smaller cinema chains here; 99% of the screens belong to one of them.
They are based in shopping malls and some other entertainment complexes, like casino complexes.
I also miss hiring VHS and DVSs from the local rental store. One became friends with the management and staff; they got to know customers' tastes and would recommend films... "you'll love this slasher / sci-fi / mindf**k thriller..."
I guess I'm officially old at 43. 😂
