They can be almost any type of hero playing a secondary role, a normal character observing the action or a simply comic relief.

Sidekicks appear in close proximity to the main hero to highlight their character traits, usually by contrast.

@urbanemovies thank you, included. I think I'll have to split the sidekicks into movie/cartoon or color/black and white sidekicks...

@mariojacobs ,

Since the list has 41 choices, please split up into two (or more polls) as you suggested above.

@dan_dassow thank you for your suggestion. IMDb had already removed 2 images. So I removed more 4 black/white images. The young generation would not have related to them anyway...

There are already three polls about sidekicks, so perhaps you could add some criteria to make your list more specific. Maybe only include options from older movies and TV shows?

@Jessica thank you for your concern. I removed some sidekicks who are also in the lists that you mentioned above: Bagheera, Robin, Tonto. My list is now unique in term of characters. I added alternate versions of Robin if that is acceptable and I managed to find some images that IMDb had erased.

@Jessica I also added those similar polls in the intro.

@mariojacobs That's nice of you to do. I like when people do that and I think it's good for our little poll enterprise, too, which sadly doesn't get as many voters as it used to.

One of the reasons I like this poll is that my vote feels pulled in three or four different directions so it's difficult to decide, which is half the fun. : )

If you decide to do an era-specific poll, you've got a lot of good ones from old TV, and FYC:

Edith from All in the Family  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066626/mediaviewer/rm4045985025/?ref_=ttmi_mi_3

Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt from MASH  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068098/mediaviewer/rm3230964224/?ref_=ttmi_mi_10

@rubyfruit76 I ACTUALLY watched all those old TV series/cartoons/movies! I picked them from my memory.

Help my memory please, in MASH Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt was the sidekick to whom?
