Poll Suggestion: Graham Greene — Writer

Graham Greene was one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century and his influence on the cinema and theatre was enormous.

Greene was one of the more "cinematic" of twentieth-century writers; most of his novels and many of his plays and short stories have been adapted for film or television.

The Internet Movie Database lists 66 titles between 1934 and 2010 based on Greene material.

Some novels were filmed more than once, such as Brighton Rock in 1947 and 2011, The End of the Affair in 1955 and 1999, and The Quiet American in 1958 and 2002.

The 1936 thriller A Gun for Sale was filmed at least 5 times under different titles.

Which is your favorite movie based on Graham Greene's work?

I really like this idea a lot and Graham Greene definitely deserves a poll -- he really was a great writer. I'm wondering why you chose these ten specifically: did you have criteria that you used? (For example, movies that got the most votes or with the highest IMDb rating or Metascore.)

Hi, thank you for your comment. I don't remember what was my criteria, but I usually got the movies from a Wikipedia list.

If I counted correctly, he wrote 35 films. You certainly don't have to include all if you don't want to but having ten with no known criteria makes the list seem very random. Maybe using IMDb's list would be a lot easier (and more reliable) than Wikipedia? And it would also make it very easy to choose films according to inclusion criteria of your choice (for example, only films with an IMDb rating of 6 or above or his 15 highest IMDb-rated movies). Here's a list of his film credits in order of IMDb rating: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&role=nm0001294&sort=user_rating,desc (There are about three that he didn't write -- you'll see that those say "self" or "thanks" and you can just ignore those. There are also four at the end that are in production but those are really easy to ignore because they have no photos or text besides the title.)

Thanks again for your interest. I set the criteria: IMDb rating 7.0 or higher. Back at 2022 I always picked the movies from a Wikipedia table. Wikipedia was my "AI" back then. I would guess that the table was in the meantime removed... I also removed the link to Wikipedia. It does not make sense now without the table.

This is a really good list of what are probably several very good movies. (I've only seen six so far.) And I love Graham Greene but this list has a lot of appeal to people who might not even know of him because they're just such good films. Oh, if you used Wikipedia for any of the info in the intro, I would still definitely suggest citing Wikipedia as your source for that in particular. I usually include that kind of thing at the very bottom, below the discussion link, and do something like "Note: Source for the introductory information: Wikipedia." If you used IMDb, though, for that info, you don't need to cite IMDb. In other words, it's a good idea to cite any outside source. : )

Day for Night (1973) is on the list, but is not written by Greene.
