Poll Suggestion: IMDb Poll Board: Homage To Gutenberg — Favorite Book

Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1400 – 1468) was a German inventor, printer and publisher who introduced printing to Europe with his press.

His work is regarded as a milestone of the second millennium, ushering in the modern period of human history.

Here follows an index of titles (adaptations, documentaries) related to an IMDb Poll Board Member's favorite book.

Which title would you be interested in watching? Or which book would you be interested in reading?

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls089279216/

If you wish to contribute to the concept: MAX 5 titles + the book related to the movie/documentary/series (adaptation)

I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for.

Perhaps it would be easier to ask for our favorite adaptation of a book?

If it is related is ok. I think not every book has an adaptation. In my case, the book "Autobiography" has only a documentary about it, but it is enough.

My favorite book is the Bible, so I don't know how you would quantify that on the list / poll suggestion but I guess you could add The Passion of the Christ to the list.

@themoviesmith

thank you for your input, or perhaps

The Ten Commandments (1956)

@mariojacobs ,

My favorite book is "CRC Standard Mathematical Tables". However, it would be a challenge to adapt this book to film or television. My second favorite book is "I, Robot" by Isaac Asimov. Sadly, the film adaption dishonors my favorite fictional character, Susan Calvin. My third favorite book is "Foundation" (and the Foundation series)  by Isaac Asimov.

@dan_dassow Foundation included. I recall using some Schaum technical books many years ago at college. I also recall very vaguely a story by Asimov about very stocky beings living in a planet with incredibly high gravity. I forgot the name of the story/book...

@mariojacobs, The Isaac Asimov story featuring very stocky beings living on a planet with incredibly high gravity is "The Evitable Conflict." This is the final story in his collection, I, Robot (1950). The story's plot centers on Stephen Byerley, the World Coordinator, who is investigating unusual failures of the Machines (super-robots managing Earth's economy and society). While the main action takes place on Earth, Byerley discusses the problems of the Outer Worlds (colonized planets) with Dr. Susan Calvin. One of the specific Outer Worlds mentioned is the planet where the extremely high gravity dictates the evolution and structure of its inhabitants. I still have a collection of around 12 Schaum technical books covering various areas in mathematics, which I purchased when I was in college over 43 years ago.

thanks, I read this story over 40 years ago, and to this day, this fact has stayed with me.

@mario - The previous Byerley story in the same collection was brilliant (if you remember, the one where he "hit the man".)

@dan - How did I,Robot dishonour Calvin, apart from making her young and pretty (which is understandable for making a film appealing to audiences). I thought Bridget Moynahan's portrayal of Calvin's personality was very good.

@dan - Also, if you thought I, Robot dishonours Calvin, you will fume at how Foundation (Apple TV) dishonours Daneel. That is REALLY bad.

Well, my favorite book is The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands by Stephen King. The Dark Tower (2017) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1648190/ It's not a great adaptation, but it's the only one so far.

I am thinking about changing the title, perhaps: IMDb Poll Board: Homage To Gutenberg — Favorite Movie Related to a Book or IMDb Poll Board: Favorite Movie Related to a Book

Mario, Those titles would give the poll a different meaning. You're currently asking for our favorite book and a title related to it. If the poll was about our favorite movie related to a book my answer would easily be The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. And FYI, Brijesh already has this poll: IMDb Poll Board: Favorite Movie Adapted From Book https://www.imdb.com/poll/KCNK5uhAsMc/

I'm afraid even I lost myself in this idea. The initial concept was a little bit complicated to understand. Something like this: Which is your favorite MOVIE/DOCUMENTARY/SERIES related to an AUTHOR/AUTHORS who do NOT have a book ADAPTED to a MOVIE/SERIES or who do NOT have a movie ADAPTED from one of his/her books

Thinking about it now, only documentaries would apply to this idea.

I'm very curios about Dante Alghieri's Divine Comedy which I ordered last month. I still didn't touch it, except considering its condition.

I don't know if this works but one of my favorite books (and the first on Jess's poll because I put mine in alphabetical order) is 'Ariel' by Sylvia Plath. It's her most influential collection of poems. Here's a movie about Sylvia Plath that specifically looks at her life as a poet (not as a fiction writer) and her relationship with her poet-husband, which largely fueled 'Ariel." She wrote it shortly before committing suicide and the movie focuses on that last era of her life.

Hi Mario,

If it's too difficult to find a film for the single favorite book of each Poll Boarder, there were a lot of books on Jess's poll that were made into movies. Off the top of my head, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Fault in Our Stars, and A Tale of Two Cities. A few more were related (for example, my post below about the first book in my list in Jess's poll).

And some may not be able to identify their one most favorite book (I couldn't).

Just a thought.

And all hail to Gutenberg! I think he had to have been the most important person of that millennia, and wow, how could there be just one (?) but in his case, it might be true. Amazing the impact.

I must confess that I was not very happy with my concept.

I changed it again.

There are already polls about favorite books, favorite movies and favorite adaptations.

I changed the suggestion to a list of documentaries about book authors or books in general.

I don't know if the is already a poll about documentaries on books.

I included documentaries about the authors already cited by you, jessica, dan_dassow , themoviesmith, Breumaster and myself.

The external link to wikipedia had to be removed, unfortunately.

Check the new list and tell me what you think so far.

It's not anymore an "IMDb Poll Board" poll  either, but you can suggest documentaries if you want.

Stan Lee:

Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels

Stephen King:

Stephen King: A Necessary Evil

If only one, then I would pick the Stephen King documentary.
