Perhaps the term 'gag' could be misleading and might cause users to focus solely on comedy, whereas I understand the intent of your poll is to highlight recurring elements, inside jokes, or self-referential nods intended for the audience or the industry at large. Maybe you should use a broader term like: "repeated reference" or "trope" even if you keep "running gag" in the title to keep it catchy.

Thank you guys for your interest. It's great to get such creative reactions about this suggestion. But I have to say as long as the editing of the polls is sabotaged like at the moment, I won't continue with figuring out another form of that poll or other polls It's nice that Col Needham tried to help me, but that's not the only thing about the new editing form. The editing of the polls in the new form is really annoying and I don't want to be annoyed in my spare time. You can mention it here, when they have re-done it or made it more bearable. Thank you, guys. :D

I saw an interview many years ago with Groucho Marx, who was talking about the history of movies. He said that in early films, they would hand everyone a brown bag lunch at lunch time that generally contained a sandwich and a banana. The origin of the "slipping on a banana peel" in films, according to him, came from the directors making the actors and crew save their banana peels after eating their lunch and then using them in the afternoon to film the slipping scenes if the film was a comedy. Groucho said that this started in the silent movie days and continued into the talkies.
So, in a nutshell, my answer would be: Slipping on a banana peel.
I have no idea how to find a picture of this other than using a title shot from the movie "Bananas" and then listing an explanation.
