I'm unfortunately mostly familiar with the Canon Films rendition, which fell short in a lot of areas despite really good music, costumes and sets. (Langella and Tolkan stole the show, by the way.) I'm guessing that the winner here would be the original cartoon, even though the style of newer cartoons (available on Netflix) seem to have a nice grim aesthetic with fine detail.
