Nogslat: I think that some of those films might not actually have been released on January 1, but rather got assigned to that date due to incomplete or inaccurate information in the database.
For example, for an American film to be released in Canada on January 1 a few months before it is released in the U.S. would be an unusual release pattern. That could be an error in the IMDb.
