Poll Suggestion: Neon Noir vs. Rubber-Hose Logic: What Fictional Screen Universe Would You Live In? (No SW/MCU/LOTR)
When people imagine living in a fictional universe, the same four names always seem to dominate the conversation: Middle-earth, the Star Wars galaxy, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Hogwarts.
This list isn't about those.
Instead, it's a celebration of the countless other worlds that deserve just as much attention. Some are peaceful. Some are terrifying. Some would almost certainly get you killed. But each offers a unique place to call home—if only fiction allowed it.
If someone handed you a permanent interdimensional passport and told you the "Big Four" were off-limits, where would you go?
Would you choose the post-scarcity optimism of **The Orville**, where exploration and curiosity still matter? Would you embrace the rain-soaked neon skyline of **Blade Runner**, despite the corporate dystopia? Maybe you'd rather spend quiet afternoons in the countryside of **My Neighbor Totoro**, where wonder hides just beyond the trees. Or perhaps you'd willingly trade the open sky for the mysteries buried beneath the surface in **Silo**.
This list isn't about the "best" fictional universes. It's about the ones that make you pause and think, *"I could actually see myself living there."* Whether it's because of the culture, the technology, the people, the mystery, or simply the atmosphere, these worlds have a way of lingering in your imagination long after the credits roll.
Some are utopias. Some are cautionary tales. Some are beautiful enough to overlook the danger. Others are dangerous enough to make you wonder if you'd survive a single day.
So if you had one permanent destination, where would your portal open?

My own personal pick would be the 23rd Century of the original Star Trek. Maybe follow this up with Larry Niven's Known Space series.
