The Exorcist for entertainment value or To Kill A Mockingbird for literary merit.

I don't think Pynchon is only famous for one novel. Inherent Vice may not even be his best known novel. Pynchon would fit in if you asked, "Which of these authors, who have only had one novel successfully adapted into a film, created the most remarkable story?"

I've done a deeper research. So I deleted two authors from the list, which are not so clearly one-book wonders: John Ajvide Lindqvist and Gillian Flynn.

Harper Lee wrote a sequel to Mockingbird and it was a best selling novel. Therefore, she is not a one book wonder.

I asked chatgpt: "It was said that Harper Lee wrote a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird and that it was a 'bestselling novel.' Is that correct?" It said: "Facts: Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960. It was her only major success and was adapted into the 1962 film. Go Set a Watchman appeared in 2015, but it was an earlier draft written before Mockingbird. The publisher marketed it as a sequel, though it is really a rough precursor with the same characters. Yes, it became a 2015 bestseller, but mainly due to Mockingbird’s fame and the controversy surrounding its release. Critically, it was far less acclaimed. ➡️ Formally, she did have a second bestselling book. ➡️ By the stricter “one true, lasting success” standard, To Kill a Mockingbird remains her only genuine hit." Me: The task I gave Chatgpt in several steps was to make out autors with single books that were one-hit-wonders like one hit wonders in music. There were a lot, like David Dundas, Mungo Jerry and many CDs full of the same kind. The task was also about a movie made of this single success. I think the criteria do match. I also asked in a further critical step, like Peter mentioned to take this criteria and be more critical about the results. That's why some of the movies dropped out. I think it was only a bestseller because of the movie, not really because it was interesting.
