You are right, it is similar but it is different.
The relationship status is about the fact that the person is in a relationship (There are many options that can change quickly) and the marital status is the legally defined marital status (Only 5 options).

In a marital status you are single.
In a relationship status there are many options. You can define your situation. You could be in a relationship, or in an open relationship, or that you are engaged or that you are cohabiting.

What about annulment and mistaken widowhood? What if somebody doesn't know whether or not he or she is still married?
