PS: Favorite Fictional 20th Century Jukebox Musical Movie

According to Wikipedia, "a jukebox musical is a stage musical or musical film in which a majority of the songs are well-known, pre-existing popular music songs, rather than original music composed for the musical. Some jukebox musicals use a wide variety of songs, while others confine themselves to songs performed by one singer or band, or written by one songwriter. In such cases, the plot is often a biography of the artist or artists. In other jukebox musicals, the plot is purely fictional. For musicals about a musician or musical act, some of the songs can be diegetic, meaning that they are performed within the world of the play or film. Works in which all the music is diegetic, however, such as a biographical film about a singer who is at times shown performing their songs, are generally not considered jukebox musicals." Which of these selected jukebox musical movies that features the popular music of real-life musicians or musical acts embedded into a fictional story is your favorite 20th century movie to rock out to? I guess Footloose is already on the list. Maybe Flashdance and Dirty Dancing?

Sorry, all are excellent suggestions, as all these movies have great soundtracks. The key is whether the songs were popular before the movie debuted. A jukebox musical movie is a film in which a majority of the songs are well-known, pre-existing popular music songs, rather than original music composed for the movie.

Footloose the song was released in January 1984, the movie was released in February 1984. https://www.imdb.com/de/title/tt1068242/ It doesn't say musical. On both movies.

Ok. Mamma Mia, that surely IS a jukebox musical. All songs existed before the movie was released and it is a musical.

Breaumaster, I have already created the 21st century version of this poll which Moulin Rouge!, Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia! lead. Maybe 'Breakin' and 'Breakin' 2- Electric Boogaloo'? But I can't say if the music is produced before or exact for that.

I'd question Saturday Night Fever since it is not a musical. Most of the Bee Gees songs were also written for the film. Most of the songs in Purple Rain were not previously released. Show Boat seems to mostly feature songs from the original musical, which does not make it a jukebox musical.

I agree, I used the wiki list as a starting list, but it needs to be more than tweaked (as it does not follow the jukebox musical rules). I will go through the list and delete movies mostly with original songs and movie biopics.
