PS: Who Will Win Dunesday? - 'Dune: Part Three' or 'Avengers: Doomsday' (Ready)

Which movie scheduled for a wide global theatrical release on Friday December 18, 2026, will have the largest worldwide box office single day take on what is being called "Dunesday" between these two likely box office titans?

On June 21, 2023, the much-awaited summer movies, Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) were released on the same date, with many moviegoers choosing to see both in theaters on the same day. The resulting double feature and the date itself are forever known to most by the pop culture term, "Barbenheimer." Fast forward three and a half years later, a similar showdown between the two likeliest biggest movies of the year is already being called "Dunesday." Both Dune: Part Three (2026) and Avengers: Doomsday (2026) are slated for release on the same December 18, 2026 date. Camps from both sides are advocating for movie fans to not choose one over the other and to see both films on the same day. While that strategy will benefit both films' box office takes; "In the end, there can be only one!" to quote the famous line from Highlander (1986).

I already made that poll suggestion with that question a while ago:

Poll Suggestion: Face-Off: ‘Dune: Part Three’ vs. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Prediction

They are not the same, did you actually read the poll suggestion or just read the title?

You are asking:

Which of these two action adventure films will be more successful (Overall Theatrical Run [Worldwide? or Domestic?]) at the box office?

I am asking:

Which of these two action adventure films will have a more successful global opening day "Dunesday" box office?

I would point out that just because a film is the first out of the blocks, doesn't mean that movie will necessarily win the full race. It just as likely one has the fastest start, while the other has better legs and wins in the finally tally, as one or the other will win both start and finish.

There are a whole bunch of dynamics going here, including how well each franchise turns out its fanbase, how often fans will repeat view each movie, whether fans see both movies as a double feature or in separate viewings on different dates, as well as, which film has better legs among many other factors.

Plus, this poll is more about the pop culture event date of "Dunesday" itself, which movie fans will have more urgency to see their film on its first day, and/or be willing to piggyback and see both films as a double feature?

I don't get the same take on your poll suggestion in reading the relevant details, nor do you use the term "Dunesday"  itself. Perhaps, "Dunesday" will catch on the term to describe the actual release date battle, and "Doomsdune" will be used to describe the larger and wider pop culture event.

Personally, I see the Avenger's movie as having a huge advantage in the long-run @ the global box office. So much so, I don't think the answer of who will win in the long run is really in doubt. But, I do think Dune has more going for it and might beat it out the first day out of the blocks per se and is the more competitive of the two races.

It is a more urgent film to see first with its Oscar pedigree, being the final chapter in Denis Villeneuve's trilogy, its IMAX exclusivity, and being a rarer occurance. As it is only one of three chapters in the current reboot and not more commonplace like the half-dozen installments from the Avengers.

Still, it might be an uphill battle as Marvels flagship franchise is a beast, but I do like how Warner Bros. has positioned themselves, and think they won't blink and move off the date. WB has both embraced the showdown and looks to benefit from it. There is no way Marvel moves off a date they first occupied, nor do they feel intimated by the competition. I fully expected both to get any early start on Thursday evening in most markets.

While, both were both looking at earlier dates initially, they both seem locked into December 18th now with about two months left before D-Day. Variety had this analysis about nine months before the big day, and I would say it is still 100% accurate, now that the day is just around the corner.
