How to change email address when the time comes

Hi,

I am a prolific reviewer on IMDb, and when it comes to getting a new computer/device and I have possible login problems I am very anxious to still be part of IMDb and not lose any of my extensive contributions. My original email address is now not long ago dormant with no chance of recovery due to suspicious activity and inactivity, though I have not forgotten it and I have likewise had no issues with remembering my password. I've so far have had no login problems due to automatic login (something that I would like to continue with) and did test myself today successfully on my phone when out of the house earlier to check that my memory was correct. Due to a stressful week of password problems and editing of personal details on other sites where I found myself forgetting a lot. If you thought it was suspicious activity with it coming from another device this is to confirm that it was me trying to relieve myself of any more worrying. Hence the querying. When the time comes when I have to replace my existing laptop where I would be logged out and/or there is a verification problem, I would like to know how to change my email address.

I have had a look at the help section to prepare myself for when the problem comes and know where to look, but it and other websites says something about an edit button in the change email address part of the website. Yet I don't see one which has left me feeling confused and I do wonder as to whether there has been a format change that has not been updated in the help section. It would be good if one was implemented to save confusion. Please can somebody provide me with an up to date and detailed step by step guide via here or the email address I have registered here on GetSatisfaction, showing all the steps, to show me how to do it, so that I know how to do it when the problem whenever I'm logged out arises. Also when I change my email address, am I going to risk losing my reviews, ratings and watchlists? This should not be a problem, but it would devastate me to lose nearly 15 years worth of contributions that I have dedicated a lot of time to. Please assure me that it won't be a problem.

Thank you.

Bethany

Hello @bethany,

If you find yourself in the scenario where you cannot access your IMDb account and have lost access completely, you can contact us with the account information you want to recover and the new email you wish to register.

@Jon Thank you Jon,

When I do do this when it comes to that point, will you send any reply/acknowledgement to the new email address I want to register, which I will absolutely include in the contact and was always going to do, so that I know what to do next? It will be very highly appreciated if you did do that. As it will be impossible to get any IMDb correspondence to the one that is currently registered. As I have said I know my registered email address and password so it's not an issue yet, but it will be if I'm logged out or if there's a verification problem. I just want to know in advance what to do when the issue happens, as it has been a difficult couple of days emotionally sorting out registration updating on various websites. Thank you.

Hello @bethany,

Currently, we have an account recovery process, and in order for the process to be executed you must provide us with the information of the email registered in the IMDb account you wish to recover and the new email you wish to register. On the other hand, you can contact us from the new email address or from the old email address. If you decide to contact us from the old email, our agents will copy your response to the new email, since you are indicating that you do not have access to the old email.

My recommendation is that the following information of your IMDb account is updated and make sure it is not false information, because we ask that information to customers for security reasons and sometimes they put false information and when we ask them they do not remember what information they put and we can not help them to recover the account, if you do not have added that information, I recommend you to add it:

  • Real name:
  • Birthday:
  • Gender:
  • Country/Region of residence:

If you have that information updated, if you lose access to your IMDb account in the future, don't worry, we will help you recover your account with no problems.

@Jon This is truly amazing Jon, thank you. I just want to feel assured now that any future updating for my account is not going to erase my reviews, ratings and watchlist, so pretty much all my contribution. I do seem to remember that there were people that had this issue in the past, which is what made me feel very wary, but as someone who logs in from only one place and device (apart from today) and only has one account (for some of the people in question it was the opposite perhaps) I hope that I am not at risk at that happening to me. Thank you again.

Also, I'll do what I can too regarding checking and/or updating personal details. If there is any issue, I will include all of that in the email/contact form and also provide a link to my account and would have done that anyway. I'm sure I added all or most of those suggested things when I first registered, as they are required details I imagine, and would have provided them anyway in the correspondence if and when the issue happens.

Hi Jon,

Just to say I have decided just to be sure to go ahead with the email updating. I have contacted IMDb via the Contact Us section, and have provided links to this thread and my IMDb account/username. I have explained the query as clearly as possible, and have said what my present registered email is and what I would like to change it to. Which is going to be my GetSatisfaction email address. Also making clear that I would like further correspondence to come to the new email address. Please can I be assured that doing this is not going to delete any of the nearly 15 years work I have contributed on a regular basis, that is what is most worrying me. I have also included in the contact form the up to date personal details you asked me to provide.

Thank you

Hi,

After finding my email address dormant, I have decided to change my email address in case I get logged out or have verification issues, despite knowing my email address and password. I have already contacted IMDb via the Contact Us form under login, being as clear as possible with what I wanted to do. As advised (brilliantly) already in my previous thread about this posted yesterday, I said what my registered email was and also the new email address that I want to use for now on (which is going to be my GetSatisfaction address) and want to be contacted by to be able to do the changes. I was told this would happen and have made it clear in the form that any correspondence regarding the change/updating is to go to the new email address. I also provided in the form/email a link to my thread yesterday, a link to my IMDb profile and my username. I was advised to state my real name, gender, date of birth and region of residence when contacting IMDb, and they are stated in the form too. So hopefully I have more than enough information to be able to change the email address. I do though have a query. When I do this, will I lose my reviews, ratings and watchlist, so nearly 15 years worth of extensive contribution or will they be intact. I only use one device and only have one account, so hopefully this shouldn't be a problem. Thank you. Bethany

Hi,

I just wanted to check as to whether there has been any response to the contact us email that I sent you yesterday morning that has stated my now inaccessible registered email and also the new email address (and lots of other details that were advised to give) I wish to change to when I am ever logged out or when verification is needed. It was indicated above in other replies that any response would be sent to both addresses, and I haven't got one to the new one over 24 hours later. Don't worry if not, as I do know that it was the weekend yesterday so submissions can take longer to process and respond to. This is only a slightly panicked query, not intended to make anybody feel pressured. Despite being told above exactly what to do, I just want things to be alright and safe and that I don't have issues. Thank you.

UPDATE: I have successfully changed my email address and my personal details so my query is now sorted. Thank you.
