IMDb Introduces Watched (Formerly Known as Seen)

We’re excited to introduce the new Watched feature, an updated version of the former Seen feature. You can now catalog the movies and TV shows you’ve watched by clicking “Mark as watched” on title pages, your Watchlist, IMDb Charts, and Lists. We have added visual progress bars on IMDb Chart pages (e.g. IMDb Top 250 Movies) to help you keep track of your watched progress for the most popular and highly rated titles across IMDb’s global audience. This feature is available on IMDb's website today, and we'll be adding it to our mobile apps soon as well.

We’ve also made it easier to automatically catalog what you’ve watched by logging any movie or TV show that you’ve Rated, Reviewed, or Checked-In as one you’ve watched as well. These movies and TV shows, as well as any you’ve directly marked as “Watched”, will be listed on “Your watch history” page.

As part of the rollout of the new Watched feature, we will be deprecating legacy Seen pages - “How much have you seen?” for Names, TV series, and select lists from User Polls - as we update to new technology and design. To provide an interim solution, customers trying to access any legacy Seen widgets or URLs (i.e. “How much have you seen?” on Name, TV series, and select lists from User Poll pages) will be redirected to a filtered Advanced Title Search results page displaying titles they have rated that is tied to a Name or TV series. We plan to add “Watched” filters to the Advanced Title Search experience as a future enhancement, so you can filter for titles you have marked as “Watched” in your search queries across IMDb’s expansive database.

For more details about the new Watched feature, please review our Help article: https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/new-features-updates/mark-as-watched-faq/GR2SD7Y4LZVNHUVH

We hope you'll enjoy these enhancements as we continue our mission to improve your experience. Your feedback is invaluable to us – we encourage you to share your thoughts and questions in this thread.

Thank you for being part of the IMDb community and for your continued support in making IMDb the go-to destination for entertainment enthusiasts worldwide.

Hey product managers, please prioritize adding the "Mark as watched" to the IMDb app. This is one of the few things I use IMDb for and I'm sure I'm not alone. Without it on the app makes the app kind of pointless. Thank you.

Hi @davycrockett11, Thanks for the note. We have been working on adding Watched to the mobile apps. The feature is being tested now and will be released as soon as it’s ready. Appreciate your patience!

I've just noticed this new "mark as watched" feature. I've been always using the "add to list: my movies: have seen" feature and have almost a thousand entries in there. Curiously they're missing from the new "watched" feature. Should I now transfer them? How? I don't see anything allowing me to mark my entire list as "watched". Should I now go through my list and manually click there a thousand times?

Howdy @charonme, It sounds like you have created a list to capture the movies you have seen before we added the Watched feature. Unfortunately there is no way to bulk mark items as Watched at this time, but it is a good suggestion that we will consider as we continue to improve the feature. Until then, you do have the option to mark each movie/show from your list as Watched. Sorry this may be time consuming, one thing that may help is switching to the compact view of the list (three line icon above your first list item). I hope this helps. Thanks again for your feedback!

I know how to download my Watchlist and the lists I created, but I dont see a way to download my watch history list. Is it possible? If not, is there a plan to add the ability to do this? This is a great feature and appreciate your efforts on this. However, I have one ask. I have been tracking my watched list in other platforms. Now since we have this cool new feature, is there a way I can do one time bulk load of a list of movies which I have already watched rather than marking each movie separately? Mine is a huge list and almost impossible to mark individual movies. Please let me know if this is possible or if you can add this bulk addition to watched list feature anytime soon. Thanks in advance.

Howdy @nizarp, Unfortunately there is no way to bulk upload a list of Watched movies and TV shows at this time, but this is something we are exploring to help keep your Watched History up to date. Thanks for the suggestion, your feedback helps us prioritize what to focus on next while we continue to improve the Watched feature.

I have watched all available episodes of a tv series that is coming back. If I mark the entire series as watched before the new episodes drop so remember exactly what I have watched so far, will that mean that the new episodes will show up as watched?

Actually what I should have also asked is whether the “Marked as watched” for that entire continuing series will switch back to not watched. There are a number of series with long gaps between the dropping of new episodes which I have already watched that are coming back that I’d like to mark as watched without going through each episode to do it.

Hello - unfortunately we do not have that capability today. You can mark the series as watched and/or individual episodes as watched. Thank you for the feedback though - we will take it into consideration as a future feature request.

Feature request: option to change the default “added on” date when marking a show as watched. I only started using IMDb 1,5 years ago, but would be nice to retroactively mark movies/shows/episodes as watched with the date I actually watched them.

I have a suggestion for the "Mark as Watched" feature. It would be nice if it were more similar to the flag that is used for the "Add To My Watch List" feature. On the home screen where IMDb suggests new movies and shows to watch, i want to be able to easily and quickly mark something as watched and have it show up right there. Maybe the yellow watch list flag turns a different color, or maybe the eye symbol showing that the show or movie has been watched appears right there. It is a little annoying that you need to click on the show to be able to check and see if you already marked something as watched. At it is a little annoying that IMDb suggests things I have already seen (though that wouldn't be an issue if it was marked with a flag or something obvious). Hope this makes sense.

Howdy @ksophia, Thank you for your suggestions! We are currently exploring adding the Watched icon to the Homepage on the iOS app! Your suggestion to exclude Watched content from Homepage suggestions is also an good idea we are are currently considering as we continue to improve the Watched feature. Thanks again as this feedback is helpful for us as we prioritize what’s next.

Hi, I'm a new member in the IMDb platform and I would like to suggest something: Currently, it seems that is not possible to Advance Search my Watched (Watch History) list.  I have more than 1000+ tittles in that list and the only option available for me to sort them out is Date Added. So, I don't know if I have to set something up on my site, either in your platform (my account) or my browser. Maybe an option could be to add the Watched list to the current Advance Search Page, just as happened with the (Your Watchlist and Your Check-Ins) in Your List submenu. I hope it helps to improve your website experience!! I apologize in advance for the off-topic post, but I couldn't find a thread about this new feature. I'm seeing a redesigned search results with a vote and watched displaying feature. I've been waiting for this feature ever since the "My IMDB" Chrome extension stopped working. But apparently this functionality isn't finished yet, as there's no indication of the vote or watched yet. I hope it will be finished and working well. Currently there is no way to copy all movies from a list to watch history. It is a problem because I can't move all my watch history to new function recently added in app (watch history and watched button). Until now I was using an own list to add my watched movies due to Android app limitations of check-in and seen functions (https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdb-app-android-fire-devices/checkin-list-problem-in-mobile-app/6758d480ba21747cfbff2cdd). Howdy @apahoquei. Unfortunately, at this time there is no way to mark all items in a List as watched all at once. Thank you for making this suggestion and providing your example, it helps us prioritize how we will improve the Watched feature.

@apahoquei, in the newest version of the iOS app, you can now mark all items in your list (including your watchlist) as watched! We will be expanding this feature to web and android as well.

SUGGESTION: It would be cool to be able to select a bunch of titles (unwatched) and change the state to "Watched" all at once.

I can’t seem to find how to export my watch history. I know how to export any of my created lists (and ratings) but why is the same feature not available for watch history? Am I missing something? There's no "export this list" button at the bottom of the list nor anywhere else. Hello @charl1e505,

Thank you for this feedback. Unfortunately at this time you cannot export your Watch History, however (good news) this is something we are planning to add to the Watch History page. I appreciate you reaching out with this feedback, as it helps us prioritize what matters most as we iterate on the Watched History feature.
