INTRODUCING: Family Relations on Name and Bio Pages

INTRODUCING: Family Relations on Name and Bio Pages

We’re excited to announce that we have added family relations details to provide more information on Name and Bio pages. This information can be found under the Personal Details section on name pages under a new Family section. You can now find line-by-line information on:

  • Spouse
  • Parents
  • Children
  • Relatives

In addition to marriage details, you will now be able to find information for siblings, cousins, uncles, grandparents, etc. A full list can be found in the drop down list in the contribution form.

You can contribute this information from under the ‘Biographical Information’ headline and ‘Family Details’ section in the submission form by clicking on the ‘edit’ button from the bottom of every IMDb name page. Alternatively, you can use IMDb Answers to submit this data.

For further details on how and what to contribute, please see our guide here Biographical Data Guidelines - Family Details

Thanks as always for all your feedback – please feel free to post your questions and comments to this thread.

So 'Spouse' replaces 'Husband' and 'Wife"? That's great for same sex couples. Well done.

Is there something that can be done regarding every "niece or nephew" being listed as a "niece or nephew", even if the person's gender is known?

For example, on https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000889/bio we are told that Macaulay Culkin is Bonnie Bedelia's "niece or nephew". Since IMDb already has the information that Macaulay is male, it should be able to identify him as a nephew rather than a niece.

I would like to echo @gromit82's question about "niece or nephew." Seems like this would be a relatively easy fix.

Here is a similar problem that could/should also be easily fixed: when a contributor adds a family relationship to someone's bio on IMDb indicating that another person (who is also listed on IMDb) is their stepchild, that relationship properly appears as "(stepchild)" on the person's bio where you added it. However, on the stepchild's bio, the relationship appears only as one of the stepchild's "Parents." Is there some reason why "(stepparent)" -- or even better "(stepmother)" or "(stepfather)" could not be added in parentheses?

I believe it is at a minimum very confusing, and in the worst case misleading, to list one person as another person's "parent" when in fact they are their stepparent. Again, this could be easily fixed, and I believe it should be.

@gromit82@Bethanny @Michelle

Here is an example of what I am talking about.

Sherman Clark

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0164510/bio

Children Charlie King (stepchild)
William N. Clark (adopted child)

Charlie King

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0454383/bio/?ref_=nm_ql_1

Parents Sherman Clark

In that example, why couldn't "(stepfather)" in parentheses be automatically added after Sherman Clark's name on Charlie King's page?

And on a related note, why not automatically apply "(stepson)" instead of "(stepchild)" for Charlie King's name on Sherman Clark's page? IMDb already has Charlie King's gender info -- you should use that data in displaying these family relationships.

Relatives

Arthur Rothstein(Grandparent)
Rob Stoner(Aunt or Uncle)
WTH does that mean.? Aunt or Uncle. He's either one or the other. Why isn't there a way to indicate which one? I tried to edit it, but it's not an option. Same does for Niece/Nephew. Seriously, this is ridiculously stupid.
