Introducing: Interests on Web

Introducing: Interests on Web

We are excited to announce the global launch of “Interests” on the IMDb website, providing entertainment fans a new way to explore their passions and personalize their IMDb experience.

Interests are single hub dedicated to a genre or subgenre to explore popular and highly rated series and movies. Using Interests you can discover the most anticipated releases, popular favorites, and watch new trailers, interviews and IMDb Original Videos.

Interests for each title are listed alphabetically on the title page header first by subgenre and then by genre, and on the Popular interests widget that appears on the IMDb homepage.

To see a full list of all available Interests, visit http://www.imdb.com/interest/all in your web browser. For customers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, you can also search for any Interest using the Search box at the top of IMDb.com. We are working to add search capabilities to more regions soon.

Adding interests is currently only available on the IMDb iOS App and the IMDb Android App. The ability to follow interests will be coming to IMDb.com at a later date.

For more information about “Interests”, please review our Help Guide.

Thanks as always for all your feedback – please feel free to post your questions and comments to this thread.

Hi all,

For information on how to add or remove Interests to/from titles, please see our new Idea thread, where you can also suggest new Interests for IMDb staff to review and determine what Interests to add next.

Please only add one suggestion per comment on the new thread.

Thanks!

Hi @Peter_pbn -

Currently the related interests widget is only available on the mobile apps.  Apologies for the confusion, I have now corrected this in the announcement text.

I really don't like that the genre and the subgenre are sticked together, I hope that in the next update you will separate the subgenre from the genre, i.e. put the subgenre in a different place because this doesn't look good at all. Also, subgenre can be a spoiler. Truly unnecessary.

"Tragedy" is problematic.

Not all the subgenres listed in the keyword section have been promoted to interests, so I guess the selection could be adjusted.

Tragedy is a massive potential spoiler in almost every possible use case.

The tragedy subgenre is hardly a spoiler, it refers to one of the oldest genres of all time. It's Greek, it's Shakespearean, and doesn't reveal much more than it connoting suffering or despair etc., "spoilers" are far more contemporary by comparison, and the term tragedy alone doesn't exactly spell out what will happen in any given title.

That is a fair point.

It should stay, but needs to be used with concerted discretion.

The subgenre is usually listed before the genre, but not in the case of "Holiday", which is placed between genres or at the end of a line. it looks messy.

Holiday is called a genre in the interest page; maybe it has deliberately been placed with the main genres.

https://www.imdb.com/interest/in0000192/

I noticed that there are titles with the holiday-season keyword that are not in the Holiday interest, for example Krampus and Christmas with Holly. I wonder how exactly the interest is set up.

This feature is clearly a work in process and needs some straightening out around the edges, but it is a good feature.

We have been crying for subgenres for 10+ years, so let's be grateful.

Neo-Noir appears to be glaringly absent.

Please consider its inclusion.

What criteria are used to determine the order in which the genres of a drama are listed? There are cases where multiple genres are listed for a single drama. What is the basis for the order in which these genres appear? For example, the drama "Sunjae Eobgo Tweeeo" is categorized under six genres: Feel-good romance, Romantic comedy, Comedy, Fantasy, Music, and Romance.

@KIMHYESOO

Generally, the subgenres are listed first followed by the main genres. Within each group, they appear to be in alphabetical order.

I think I would prefer the main genres to be listed first.

It is odd that even this expanded field still only displays three of the main genres when the title has more than three genres.

@Peter_pbn it looks like this on web version, 1 subgenre, 9 genres (thriller at the end).

It can go up to 15 genres and subgenres. Not a good idea, in my opinion.

You are using reference view?

OK, I jumped to conclusions. But for example Mad Max: Fury Road has thriller as a genre, but it isn't included. Perhaps the limit is 10 items.

@Peter_pbn yup, that's it, subgenres take precedence over genres. 🤐

This title for example has 15 genres and subgenres, 8 subgenres and 2 genres (Animation and Biography) are at the top of the page, but there are also 5 genres in section at the middle of page. So, if you want to find that this is a documentary, you need to scroll down.

Documentary as a genre should be placed at the top, as first genre (before any subgenre), not alphabetically. This concept makes things very confusing

Please add Screenlife as an available subgenre. The closest is Found Footage Horror, but Screenlife films are in a category of their own. Thanks!

How do you search for subgenres like 'Dark Fantasy' in Advanced Title Search (https://www.imdb.com/search/title)?

@Flyingrat Most (but not all) Interests are actually implemented via plot keywords which can be searched on the advanced title search (ATS) page.  We have not yet added a separate field for Interests, however, there is an easy workaround in the meantime ...

Start at the "All Interests" page at https://www.imdb.com/interest/all/ and navigate to the specific interest you wish to use in an advanced title search.  In your example, Dark Fantasy is at https://www.imdb.com/interest/in0000095/ and on this page click the "All" button under the description of the interest to reach: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_movie,tv_special,video,tv_series,tv_miniseries&interests=in0000095 -- you can now add other parameters into this interest search via the filters in the left-hand side of the page (click "Expand all" near the top to see the full list of filters).  You can bookmark/favourite any specific queries you expect to use regularly in your browser.

For example, Dark Fantasy movies which you have not seen, sorted by vote volume would be -> https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&my_ratings=exclude&interests=in0000095&sort=num_votes,desc

You can also click an Interest on a title page to go directly to its landing page and therefore skip the "All Interests" page in the instructions above.

Hope this helps.

Maybe interests that are displayed on a series page based on the keywords on the series level should also be displayed on the episode pages?

Or do you wish for subgenre keywords to be added to each episode?

Genres can only be added to the series, but are displayed on all episode pages.

I noticed recently that the genre category "tragedy" was added on a number of films. Is it possible to remove this OR give an option to hide this? In many cases these are movies where the main character dies. And given that that isn't always known going into it, it's like an instantaneous spoiler.

More than once now I have watched a film after looking it up on here and spent the entire duration knowing the plot would lead to a tragic ending, that otherwise would've been surprising, or at the very least, an uncertain conclusion.

Please consider toggling or removing this.
