Ratings by Season

Idea: enabling a season-specific rating feature.

Currently, users can only provide ratings for an entire series title or individual episodes. However, many watchers prefer certain seasons over others, so it would both benefit industry professionals with feedback about watchers’ preferences based on season, and also the public by allowing the rating of entire seasons without having to rate each episode (which would likely save users’ time and increase user contributions) or only the whole series (which doesn’t distinguish user preferences over multiple seasons). The addition of this feature would also likely increase user sentiment of the IMDB tool as a whole.

@Col_Needham thank you for the response!

I see the benefit of being able to rank all the episodes on one page, and view how a season performs across all the episodes.

However, I still stand by adding this option due to response-burden a user incurs. Currently, ratings allow minimum feedback (rating a whole series) or full feedback (every episode) or rating a random amount of episodes (resulting in irregular or variable feedback amounts).

Adding the whole-season rating option for users that don’t want to give 32 ratings for an entire 4-season series would benefit multiple parties. Users and industry professionals in the current application state get either 1 rating for the whole series and/or 32 ratings (hopefully) for each episode, with more users only giving the whole series a rating. By having a season-rating feature there would an intermediate option of 4 ratings/data points to interpret for certain, and would likely be utilized more by users more than the episode-by-episode rating.
